Huskie Sledging Without Snow

Hi,

Does anybody know of a person or business that produces Chariots (for lack of a better description) for training huskies to pull in places where it doesn't snow.

I guess you could call it a cart, sled with wheels or maybe a old lawn mower converted into a husky pulling device but I'm keen to see what's available.

Thanks all! All I want for christmas is a sled to train my huskies.

Pawnee Peak:

Not wanting to let even one weekend slip by this summer, I knew the coordinating would be tricky for the 21st. The kink was we had a birthday dinner at a top notch eatery scheduled, and hiking takes a lot out of a person who barley woke up at 2:30am. Hoping for a timely trip that would net us a nap, we took off at 4:26am for the nearby Indian Peaks Wilderness ($9 cash in hand, mind you). The drive was stupid easy and went quickly. At 5:45am we were donning headlamps ...

So, Jenn was supposed to tag along on this one. She had mentioned that Ken might want to do some fishing, and that had me digging through fishing forums cross referencing things with the 14ers. My hope was to have a camp site situated between a lake and the trailhead. This happened to turn out perfectly, except he was working and Jenn was bailing on us for flagstone or something. Oh well, the studying and preparations I made had my mind locked on the Missouri Gulch area for yet another weekend ...

Time for me to play a bit of catch up on these outdoors posts before I get sidetracked, again. On August 6th, it was just me, Matt and Lindsay headed out to the south side of the Grays/Torreys duo. When we hiked Torreys from that side, I noticed a multitude of dispersed campsites along the Peru Creek Road. The road is a bit rough with a couple of tricky washouts, but typical passenger cars should have no problem with a bit of care. Private property extends past the Chihuahua Gulch Jeep road so ...

Heh, there's not much to speak of on this outing. We camped at Ute Pass and tried hiking Ute Peak to no avail. There was a sign at the trailhead that stated a mere 5.5 miles to the Ute Peak Summit. Pfft. There's not much to say about this trip. We circled the sub-treeline mound trying to find any hint of a trail. We never found one. It was just trees followed by more fallen trees. We hiked, then turned around for camp and ate once we all gathered again. Mmmmm, fajitas were good. Stupid trail ...

July 24th, 2010

This was yet another hike that was supposed to be a Holy Cross attempt. Watching weather every hour for weeks on end helps a little, but there's still no way of knowing what area is going to get the actual rain storm. A recent post online by a NOAA meteorologist shed some light on the % subject. He said that when you see "20% chance of rain", it means that 20% of the ground in that region should see measurable rainfall. I'm still not sure what "region" entails, ...

It took every ounce of focus to get the van loaded in time last Friday. I was passed out by 7:00pm the day before and that meant the roof carrier would be quite the ordeal. It was. Somewhere in the midst of my bumbling wine preps I had not even come close to securing it properly. So basically when I woke up Friday it was back to square one. Complicating things was the fact that my brother was riding with us. But in the end I had a perfectly packed van with just enough space for three people and ...

Sometimes weather and schedules just don’t mix. With Lindsay’s mom in town, my brother, mom and I had hoped to do Holy Cross via Halo Ridge since the Wife had no intention of doing that route anyway. I watched animated radar for three days as the overall forecast deteriorated into “mostly cloudy with a 40% chance of thunderstorms after 11:00am”. Blast, there’s no way that route can be finished that early without starting at midnight. Plans were shifted and I eyed a few different mountains ...

I am so excited! I went to the pet store today to fill up on Eagle Pack for the huskies. While I was there, I was looking at the harnesses they have there. You know, the ones that help keep from tugging. We had tried the Gentle Leader on both Isis & Nanuk with no success. I finally said to hell with it and bought two, one for Nanuk & one for Isis. (Mika walks well on a regular collar.)

It was one of the best purchases for them I have bought to date! It is a harness with the ring ...

Even better, traffic was so light and the troopers so sparse that we made it to Silverthorne from Loveland in 1hr 33min. Then a spanner was thrown in the works. A gang of teenage girls destroyed our progress at the Frisco Conoco. We only needed a few minutes for a pit stop and it ended up being 30. Most route descriptions for the Crags trail say it's 11-13 miles round trip. Definitely on the long end of our hikes, but Square Top was about that distance.
This is one of those mountains I've stared at through the front window for two and a half years now...

I awoke Saturday morning at 3:00am on the couch after some sort of party, it seems like. I hauled myself upstairs and slept soundly until 6:30. Then I got up for no good reason and began my day. Browsing through some old hiking pictures while moving them to an external hard drive, I got an urge.

Digging around the county website, I found the coordinates and trail information on this ...

Originally, we had planned to camp in the Rawah area again as a season ending. The overnight lows along the front range had dipped into the low 50's, and the thought of gearing up for cold at elevation made for easy consensus. Canceled. It was a good decision too. By the time Tuesday rolled around the multitude of weather forecasts seemed to be on the same page. A cold front for the weekend was predicted to include highs 25° lower than normal, mostly cloudy skies, fog and rain. Knowing what ...

When determining the various hikes through the season, my biggest resource was individual trip reports posted on obscure blogs. The big sites often have generic info in poorly written reports with nary a picture. Add the fact that Buffalo is just a lowly 12er and you have a recipe for little information. What I did find filled me with wondrous thoughts of a quick five mile round trip mountain. So it was decided that Saturday would work out peachy for a short hike to return the van for Lindsay's ...

As you can probably tell from the title, we came up just a little short of a 14er this outing. This trail has been in the back of my mind nonstop since I first discovered it. All available trip reports and obscure blogs made it sound like a mix of steep and easy. Easy meaning there wasn't supposed to be any serious rock jumping or hand holds to move upward. But no matter how many different ways I looked at topos or adjusted views in Google Earth, the hike looked relentless in elevation change. ...

Every time we pack up we have slightly more things, and yet we still manage to end up with slightly more space in the van too. This creates that "what in the hell am I forgetting" syndrome. Beginning on Monday, I piled all of our gear together in groups by categories and seam sealed the tent as well...

These mountains had been in the back of my mind for nearly six weeks. I learned that topo maps look different than actual terrain. All of the coordinating came together rather easily, and we were to have eight dogs and five people. Despite getting up at 3:12am, we weren't out the door until 4:27. Not quite enough time for the 6:00 trailhead I told everyone, but we managed to make it around 6:15-ish kinda. Shortly after that we were ready to roll. I'll call it 6:30am when we headed out...

It seemed like the idea of taking a weekend off from hiking was destined to fail form it's inception. Not three days into the week rumors began to swirl as schedules and preferences were coordinated.
This mountain has been on this year's list just aching for a try. Rated as quite possibly the easiest 14er hike, I can tell you it's a bit easier than that even. Of course, eight weekends in a row at elevation probably had some impact as well.

Friday July 24, 2009:

I'm so glad the dogs have gotten used to the morning load ups. Every weekend nets better and better behavior (despite what my mom would say)...

I'll begin with the weekend of July 18th...

I had to wait until the wife got home at 3:00pm before departure. At the time it didn't seem like a big deal. But after working our way through Fort Collins and west on HWY 14, the clog of touristy trailer haulers set the pace for the next 40 miles. Some people were absolutely insane on that road. The most memorable instance happened when a diesel pickup came rushing up alongside everyone from four cars back hauling a trailer at what must have been ...

These pre-four-o'-clock mornings are getting easier with each passing weekend. My, and my mother's habitual tardiness has finally taken a back seat to getting on the trail at more opportune times. This being the fourth weekend of mountain adventures, the dogs have learned that the equipment loading and early wake up calls mean there's a long journey ahead...

Everything had gone exactly as planned. We got up at 2:00am Friday, then my mom showed up at 3:00am and we were off. Taking HWY 93 at that time was not the best of choices. Being a Colorado native, deer are nothing new or very surprising. But the thing that threw me was the sheer numbers. I ended up driving the speed limit after the second hard braking situation before Co 128. Just one more pit stop in Golden and we launched up Gennessee hill on I-70 for the continuous leg to Kite Lake. Exiting ...

Eh, it's not a 14'er but a good warm up...

After several hundred miles of fairly intense training this spring, it was time to put it to the test. For two weeks I scrutinized hiking forums, weather radars and CDOT traffic cams trying to find a reasonably dry hiking route. As the weekend approached, my list of six different trails quickly whittled down to Mt. Audubon (being able to see it from my house played a key role in that decision too). Weather forecasts made the final call on the day, ...
