PostSubject: Hi I'm new here and have so many questions!   Hi I'm new here and have so many questions! EmptyTue Jun 25, 2013 12:51 am

Hi! my name is Tammi and my fiance and I recently purchased 2 Sibe puppies! We have had Loki going on about 2 months now. We decided to get a second dog a week or two after obtaining Loki, he was often lonely when we had to leave (cried at the door until we decided to take him with us) and after a bit more extensive research we learned how Huskies are a pack dog, and they like to have company. Loki was doing stupendous with his training otherwise so we figured we would browse around and think about our options. First we checked our local APL and lets just say that turned out rotten, all the dogs there were either special needs (medical), bad with dogs, bad with cats, or bad with small children... all of which we couldn't work with. (I have an almost 3 year old daughter and she has a cat, lol) Then we started to check the newspapers for any dogs who needed a good home or things of that nature. We found one 5 year old shepherd mix named Isabelle who we fell in love with, she did well with Loki in our trial run home visit and everything, and then the day we went to get her and bring her to her new forever home her owners backed out (unknown reasons). We were pretty discouraged after that and stopped looking for a week, then about 3 weeks ago a friend contacted me on Facebook (she knew I was dogie hunting before) and told me about her mom's situation. She had purchased a husky puppy from the mall in hopes of getting over her 13 year old Shetland sheepdog passing away (old age) and go figure the puppy wasn't for her. She was a 56 year old woman, and huskies are little balls of energy! So she arranged for ownership of the puppy to be switched over to me and after some fee's we now were owners of two Siberian husky pups 3 weeks apart in age! Lets just say these past three weeks of my life have been hectic, but i am loving it. These little angels have gotten me off of my ass again, I take them on separate walks 2 times a day with my daughter. We go to the dog park at least once a week to socialize them with other dogs, they swim in our pool with us from time to time, and they even sleep in my daughters bed with her lol. Well I guess that's it for my introduction, now for my questions

I did a little bit of research on the types of activities you can do with huskies such as Working Pack Dog, and Weight pulling. But the information is a little too hard for me to understand all at once. Overwhelming so to speak. So If anyone can explain these things a little bit more for me I would highly appreciate it.

after transferring ownership of Dolly to myself I bought a pedigree and found out dolly has 4 Champions in her bloodlines! (surprising since she was a Mall puppy i assumed she came from a puppy mill) So I was wondering what kind of things i could do to maybe get into dog shows! I have always been interested as a child. I owned the AKC breed standard book for all AKC recognized breeds and used to read it for fun! I guess what I am saying is that I have no idea where or what to start with. and help with that would be great as well

Thanks all, look forward to reading your replies

Thanks for the welcome! I browsed this forum for about 3 months before we decided to get Loki because I wanted to get a more down to earth feel of what owning a husky was like!

Here is a pic of Loki i took just the other day, He is as strong as an ox I swear! My fiance puts on roller-blades (he is a big man 6 foot 6 and 360 lbs) and Loki pulls him. I feel like he might be big for his age too!

What a cutie! Very Happy Just be careful not to let him pull too much, my females 11 months old but she doesn't run or pull at all yet, I'm waiting until 18 months. The reasoning is that they're so young that you could damage their joints before their growth plates have settled in. 9 or 12 months may be fine but at 3 months I would hold off and do some mental stimulation instead until he's a bit older Very Happy

Wow Shocked thanks for letting me know! See that is exactly why joining this forum was a good idea! I don't think I can keep him from running though, that is his favorite thing to do in our back yard.

Running is fine in a yard because its softer on the joints. The issue is when you're on the pavement, and having him pull, is what puts too much strain on his joints. So yes lots of backyard play time will be fine Very Happy

I just realized my post sounded stupid. Yuki runs at the dog park and plays with other dogs full speed, I just meant we do not do consistent jogging / bikejoring etc yet as it could potentially damage her joints. We're super excited to start bikejoring next spring though!

Welcome to a fellow Ohioan!
We have let our Bourbon play and run all he wants on his own or with our other pups in the yard. The thing Megan is talking about it the pup overdoing it to please you. They will walk on to far of a walk cause they are on the leash were you set the walk pace (jog etc) and the walk distance but at the back yard or the dog park excitment and stimulation is the only thing keeping them going they should not strain. Additionally I agree w Megan on the "pulling" bikejoring, rollerblading etc as a limited task I have been told that wait until 12 months when the muscles and joints are further developed to start weening into any "training" for these type of sports or fun. I think the key there was the weening small time small weight and graduatly get into it. There is a great show topics on here and there are a few people who are starting up and there are some who show alot. Browse those areas and also given some time I am sure those people will pipe up! Good luck have fun!

Welcome! And +1 to everything Megan said.

Letting them run as much as they want, in an unstructured setting, on a soft surface is perfectly fine. It's the running on a paved surface, and definitely the pulling that can damage the joints.

But there are several members here that I think can probably help you out with the weightpulling and showing when the time comes!

haha well I hope you took no offense! I didn't really want to go into more detail by saying she had deteriorating disk syndrome and all that, plus she is the only one in her household (her husband passed a few years ago), So a hyper puppy really wasnt the best fit for her lol. I was glad to take dolly off her hands though bc she is precious! I have found that she isnt really as destructive as they were saying she was, but thats probably because i have given her outlets for her energy (walks, play, training) and now that she is doing well Loki and her are possibly the best puppies I have ever owned! They have so much personality it is amazing! but anyways here is a pic of dolly Very Happy
