Let's Sniff and Eat everything Outside Empty
PostSubject: Let's Sniff and Eat everything Outside   Let's Sniff and Eat everything Outside EmptyMon Jul 08, 2013 7:00 pm

Hi Everyone! We got our pup a week ago, she is 9 weeks today and potty training is HELL! This girl poops like 5 times a day and I never know when she has to go. She has gotten really good about peeing outside fairly quickly (when she really has to go) but I will literally be outside for 10-15 min and nothing, then she comes in, 5 min later poops in the house. We reward her for pottying outside and we do crate but I don't leave her in there all day. I don't want to put her in there every time she doesn't poop. I just don't know what to do. She will pee in the house sometimes too if we haven't taken her out right away. But she'd rather be outside eating everything in the yard and sniffing every blade of grass.... I don't have time to walk her for 15 min at a time all day. HELP!

5 times a day is a lot of pooping. What kind of food is she eating and how much of it? Has she been fully vet checked?

What is her poop like? Mucusy, runny, gassy, super stinky, etc? Is there a dirt patch you can potty train on? It helps to have a very boring spot, stand there and wait for them to eliminate, don't move- she'll finally start realizing that that is her potty space, and the sooner she just goes the sooner she can go somewhere more interesting, none of this sniffing around for a billion years (ours tried that, but she learned that mom is more stubborn hah). With the pooping inside, I might try moving a poop outside where you want her to go. Ours had a similar issue with not wanting to poo outside (she had never been outside before coming to our home so she didn't like pooping outside) we learned to always leave the most recent poo as a marker and pick up the older one until it clicked that pooping is an outdoor activity.

first, she's a beauty!
now, I'd recommend cutting her food back to a cup in the morning and a cup at night with maybe a half cup in the afternoon. She may be overfed which can cause diarrhea and (obviously) more poo. I'm not sure how much she's getting but that could be the problem. Sometimes, they will appear to eat everything you put in front of them but they really aren't hungry, so maybe monitor that more closely. Also, it could be the food. Dragon was on Blue Buffalo at first and he couldn't handle it. It made him poop much more and it gave him the WORST gas. I think it has more protein or something in it so that was the problem. We switched to TOTW and he has 2 good solid poops twice a day now. Good luck.

She only gets a total of 1 cup of food during the day, 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup at night and we chop up her treats so she doesn't even get a full treat for each time she potty's .... her poop is normal, still "log" like... she is eating taste of the wild.

We have tried to keep her in 1 spot but she just runs all over outside and we are constantly pulling her to keep her from eating things lol

and she has no gas.... so I don't think it's a reaction to the food....

hmm i dont know then.. are the poops large? I mean is she pooping a large amount each time or are they little poos? If they are smaller, she could be getting distracted in the middle of pooping and that's why she does it so many times. Sometimes Dragon will stop peeing if I am not totally silent when I take him out. I always wait until he is completely finished to praise him or treat him because otherwise he gets distracted and won't finish. If she poops inside try to catch her in the act and yell NO! really loud to distract her and then rush her outside to get her to finish.

At that age I was feeding Karli three times a day and feeding her about 2 1/4c of food. They usually go poop about an hour after feeding. Until she's potty trained, I'd keep her tethered to you with a leash at all times, this way you can always keep an eye on her. Do you take her potty on a leash? If so, keep her close and keep repeating "go potty" or something similar. I did this with Karli and now she goes out on command. Walks also help promote pooping so if she's not pooping you can walk her for a couple minutes to see if that helps. Karli only poops twice a day because I only feed her twice a day now. It is a little odd that she's pooping so much.
