PostSubject: Hello from VA!   Hello from VA! EmptyTue Jul 09, 2013 12:19 pm

Hello all!  I just wanted to make a post introducing myself, my girlfriend, and our two Huskies, Storm and Jack.

I have always wanted my own dog to raise from a puppy and was half-heartedly looking for one from a local breeder.  I met a nice lady that worked with several breeders and she started helping me on the search.

That's when we found Jack!  Jack is (now) a nine month old purebred Siberian Husky that we got from a breeder in MO (not at all local, but you can't help which one you fall in love with!) when he was eight weeks old.  He flew on a plane to get to us!  It was very cool.  When we picked him up from the lady that helped us find a puppy who met our needs, we were completely and utterly in LOVE!  Those blue eyes were hard to resist.

After going through all things puppy related with Jack (crate training, potty training, trick training, and all the joys that go along with it) we learned very quickly that a Siberian Husky is the only breed for us, despite a lot of challenges along the way... The sounds Jack could make when he first learned to crate train were literally unbelievable.  We called it his "pterodactyl" noises, haha!

Once we felt Jack was mature enough to handle another dog but not too mature that there would be fighting, we started the search to possibly adopt an older Siberian from either a rescue or an animal shelter.

We were very picky and it took almost three months, but when we met Storm (then called Artemis) we knew he was the one!  His time was literally almost up in an Animal Shelter that bordered our county.  I managed to get all the paperwork (they made me go to the DMV!!) we needed and adopted him on Friday 7/5.  We think he is a four year old Husky and is probably purebred but we can't say for sure.  We haven't had him long (five days) but the transformation he has made has been incredible!  I don't have very many pictures of him yet because he was in bad shape when we got him.  His coat was disgusting, he was covered in dead ticks, and he needed some weight put on...  He also has a deformed/crushed foot (maybe a car did it? he's TERRIFIED of them) and a snout that looks like it's been broken before. He used to flinch whenever you tried to pet him and just stood awkwardly in our living room all day long because he didn't know how to really be a "pet" I don't think... Now he hops up on the couch, gives kisses, plays with toys/bones, and LOVES to sleep right beside the bed.  He even has started doing what we call "happy feet" which is an excited prance whenever you say his name with his tail high and proud.  He's definitely coming out of his shell!

Anyway that's about our boys!  We love them dearly and I'm so excited to share some of their accomplishments and life with you guys!

As far as introducing ourselves...  My name is Olly. I'm a University of Richmond graduate with a degree in Computer Science.  I work 9-5 and support our little family, but my hobbies include horseback riding (we have 3 horses too!) and hiking and camping with my girlfriend, Heather.  Heather recently graduated from VCU with a Biology degree and is headed back there for Med School next year!  In the interim between, she works at a Veterinary Surgical place and gets to assist on super cool surgeries and has even been in surgeries where they operated on dogs that have been in films and TV shows!  Super cool!

So that's about us!  Now for the part you guys really care about... Pictures!

Storm is the black one and Jack is the light red.  Jack is bigger than Storm, despite being much younger...

Husky brothers! (: They sleep beside the bed and Jack will sometimes sleep for an hour on the bed, but he gets too hot and gets down.

Welcome, your huskies are beautiful! So are you guys living down in Richmond since your girlfriend goes to VCU? My fiancee and I are up in Reston (just outside of DC).

Welcome! Cute pictures. And it sounds like you really saved Storm from a bad situation, so I'm sure he is more than grateful!

Thanks Sean!  And yes, we are located in Richmond.  Well just outside the City actually.

Do you do the Northern DC area Husky meet-ups?  We were going to go but we always seem to miss them, or Jack was too young for the first few we saw. :/

~~

And thank you, MGoBlue! We definitely think Storm seems to truly appreciate his living situation upgrade.  He's brought so much joy into this house and I can't wait to see where he is in six months...

We haven't been to any yet because Kaikoura is still a bit young (she's 12.5 weeks). When she gets older, we're definitely going to go to as many as we can. If you're ever up in the area and want to have a puppy play date, let us know, Kai loves to meet new huskies!

Sean-- yes absolutely! Jack loves new friends and Storm will be in much better shape soon, so we will have to plan one for sure! Heather and I have been talking for ages on how we would like for Jack (and now Storm too!) to make lots of Husky friends. Is Kai the one in your avatar? She's so fluffy!!!!

And thanks Maya! I love both of your red girls! Since Jack was my first Husky I'm really partial to that gorgeous light red coloring. We thought it was rare or something when we first saw Jack (he's kinda more brown-ish up close) but we are learning that Huskies come in all kinds of varying colors!!

Maya's my first husky and Sophie my second so i really love reds! I wanted to get another red but my mom wanted a black and white with blue eyes. I saw a picture of Kay and we just had to go get her from that shelter. So we ended up with a black and white with light brown eyes. xD

Yes, that's our fluffball in my avatar. That was when we first got her home, she's much bigger now. Here is her scrapbook if you're interested:

It's funny that is a very similar story to Storm's!! Heather and I really wanted a light grey female for our next one, but we ended up with Storm! I actually was just browsing Petfinder/Craigslist (sometimes they put up emergency alerts on Craigslist for dogs that only have 1-2 days left at the shelter, and I always check them first for Huskies haha) and Storm popped up on Craigslist and I showed his picture to Heather... and well before I knew it we were on our way to see him and then 8 hours later we had a second dog!

Wow she's just the cutest puppy I've ever seen! So fluffy! We are definitely doing a play-date now, I think Jack might fall in love, haha. Very Happy
