Food change suddenly starving? Empty
PostSubject: Food change suddenly starving?   Food change suddenly starving? EmptyTue Jul 23, 2013 11:41 am

So I recently switched from Blue Wilderness puppy to Orijen puppy. The blue was not agreeing with Odin's system and he was having loose really smelly poops for 3 weeks straight. I switched over to Orijen cold turkey since he was doing SO poorly on Blue. His poops firmed up almost immediately. The only problem I have had is he is acting STARVING all of a sudden.

Before he would eat tentatively and I figured he was stopping once he was full. Now I give him 1/3 of his food over three feedings and after each meal he is licking his bowl and acting like I have not fed him for days.

I have also reduced his food from three cups to two and 1/2 cup since people thought that the loose poops could be because of overfeeding.

Am I under feeding him now? I'm a little worried because he is a little small. He is 17 weeks and 20 pounds which is a bit lighter than I have seen other pups of his age.

Dana I think it all depends on the Kcal in that food both are good quality so it is not the going from bad to good. It could be he realy likes the new food and he is a pup. Bourbon devoured his food until we got the "right" amount for him and until he was "secure" that his food was his and not something the others dogs would take from him.

Thanks! I think I might just be a little over worried because he is a little scrawny. Smile His energy levels are waaaay up since switching though which is good.

I had Dizzy at around 2.5-3 cups a day, but he got kinda chunky, so I'm cutting him back down to 2 cups a day. At any amount of food, he acts like he's starving, I'm pretty sure he would eat until he puked, and then eat some more if I let him. He LOVES food!

Yes, he has always been a nut about food. I add a spoonful of pumpkin to his mainly to make him slow down a bit, so it takes him 3-4 min to finish his food rather than under a minute. I feed him 2/3 cup 3 times a day. I love Odin too, he's adorable!

I wouldn't worry about it. My dogs act like they are starving all the time no matter how much I feed them. Be happy that he likes his food and hope that he continues to love it as time wears on. You won't notice it overnight but so long as his BM's are solid, he's happy and active, and he's gaining rather than losing then all should be fine. If he starts losing weight then up his portions, but 2.5 cups/day should be adequate and makes for a good starting point.

Just waned to give a little update. He is doing GREAT on Orijen puppy! Thanks for all the advice. Odin is my first dog so I guess I am being a little bit of a worry wart. I never thought I'd be so interested in poop but oh well. They are finally well formed and solid!! Razz Now I just need to convince my SO that we are not starving him into oblivion.

Yea I am pretty relieved that he is feeling so much better. The energy spike after the switch is a little insane! He constantly has the zoomies! (even after playing with him ALL DAY)

I DO have a scrap book started! I just need to add more pictures. I am super lazy about pulling them off of my camera. It looks like I have a project for when I get home! haha~

OH zoomies were a constant until at least 6 months and even to this day Bourbon gets the zoomies once in a awhile. Now he gets his second wind everynight around 830-9 just before he cashes out while we watch tv. I am not saying the second wind is the same as the zoomies. The zoomies consisted of him bouncing off the walls, running into the furniture, and he would jump on the couch including on the head and arm rests. He does not really get on the couch any other time. And these zoomies usually included a trip around the inside of the house at a high rate of zig zagging speed. His second wind consists of a small game of ball or pester mom and a tug of war with Baylin usually tugging on her neck for 15 minutes. So now that 15 minutes seems like his version of the zoomies but everyonce in a awhile he zoomies around the house and couch!
