My dogs and a new kitten Empty
PostSubject: My dogs and a new kitten   My dogs and a new kitten EmptySun Jul 28, 2013 11:47 pm

So on Wednesday I was driving home from school and I saw a little black kitten on the side of the road so obviously I had to stop and pick it up. Well no one has stepped foward to claim the poor guy, so now we're contemplating keeping him but my dogs are driving us insane with him.

We already have a cat, they were all raised as puppies with him, they completely ignore him. They show no interest in him, and never chase him when he walks around or anything.

Well I introduced the dogs to the kitten, one at a time because frankly I had no idea if they were all cat friendly. Well they all did fine, so now I'm letting them all be out together when I'm home but they will not stop chasing him when he runs around, and then they gang up on him, and they're so much bigger then him that I worry about them hurting him.

What have you guys done to stop your older Huskies from chasing a cat in the house?

Any tips to get Ares to stop focusing so much on the kitten? It's like it's all he thinks about, he just sits on the couch and staes at him.

Thanks in advance Smile

and of course a picture! Smile We named him Stark, after GoT Smile

What a cutie. We also just adopted a new kitten. Saphire (who was also raised around cats) also seems really interested in the kitten. I have spent a lot of time working to teach Saphire the command "mine." Basically, I say mine in my best mean mommy voice and pick up whatever she is after. This way she associates that it is mine and she can't have it. Since I am mommy she immediately backs off. So now when she is pestering the kitten I just say mine and she immediately backs off.

Unfortunately, the kitten really likes to pick at her also. She will go into Saphire's crate just to annoy Saphire. Or she will climb on top of the crate. So far though the new kitten has done a good job of asserting her place in the house. So between me saying mine and the kitten getting puffed up and hissing, Saphire is learning quickly that she is not one to mess with. Today (just 1 week after getting the kitten) they were sleeping on opposite ends of the couch!

I wish this kitten would do that! It's pretty obvious that up until a couple days ago he had never seen a dog. He just ends up getting backed into a corner and hissing and swatting at them, and then I'm afraid that he might get one of their eyes or something.

I've been trying the leave it command with Ares because he knows it, but apparently it only counts half the time when dealing with the kitten. Since we got it, he hasn't been eating, and only goes out for a minute because he constantly needs to see the kitten. It's just really annoying at this point lol

We are making some progress, this was Ares and Stark about 20 minutes ago Smile

It seems the only time all of them are calm is when we're in bed

HAHA! First it was Stark the dog, now it's Stark the cat... GoT is taking over the world!!

Have you tried putting the cat in a carrying cage and letting the dogs sniff around (or doing it the other way around depending on your dogs)? That way both parties are protected, and they can get their curiosities out in a controlled environment. Also, large cat trees are a godsend in my house.

Aw! So cute! I think Dena is right and they will be buddies! I just don't let Dizzy make eye contact with our cats, because then he starts to fixate and so do they and I'm worried an all out war will break out, neither cat was raised around dogs. I did let them each swipe him on the nose once, so now when they hiss, he backs right off. We have one aggressive cat and he would actually chase and attack Diz if I let him, so its best just to keep Dizzy from looking at him. As long as I do that we have relative peace...

the gf got a kitten who is two weeks younger then rikku (10wks) and the kitten starts the play with the pup, they both are pretty nice to each other, although it is funny to watch. the kitten will chase rikku around, and then tease her by jumping on stuff higher then rikku can jump on..lol...
