Walking with the Husky Empty
PostSubject: Walking with the Husky   Walking with the Husky EmptySat Dec 14, 2013 4:04 pm

Hey Everyone!

I have a 1 1/2 year old husky that we got February this year from a friend of the family. He is a good dog all in all, but walking is a pain.
I just get pulled mostly the whole time.  And I am also confused about letting my husky pull me on rollerblades.

  • Does the husky think he is the boss when we pull in front of me?
What is the best way to stop this, with just a neck collar?
Will a husky think he is the boss if he pulls me with my rollerblades on?

What confuses me also is, when walking 'I' should be leading; making me the alpha. When he is pullling me with blades, he is the alpha?

Thanks for the replies!

It's in a husky DNA to pull.

The way I deal with this is that when Bodhi is in harness, he is allowed to pull.
I encourage it then, because I am running or skijoring with him.
When he is on a leash and wearing his prong collar, he has to behave and walk at my side like a good doggy citizen.

A lot of times, I walk him at night and let him have free lead without the prong collar.
The prong collar is mostly for my wife.
When Bodhi pulls her, she gets upset.

And when they pull they are supposed to be leading. Not alpha in the "now you're my submissive beta silly human" sense but leading in the sense of being alert and stubborn and looking out for danger, so possibly ignoring you.

Even if the whole alpha/submissive dynamic is real for a dog, which is very controversial and can never be proven one way or the other, I don't think you need to worry about being displaced and overtaken by allowing your dog to work the job that he/she is meant to do. If anything your fulfilling her needs and tiring her out and putting her in a better place to respect you and trust you. Making you in fact still the "alpha," as it were.

Yeah I agree with them above. But if you are pulling on roller blades make sure you buy him an xback harness! Those are made for pulling and distribute the weight to where it should be so it doesn't hurt him.
