Curious as to what every one does for their fur kids teeth. Since we got rikku I try to brush her teeth 2 times a week but she always tries to eat the tooth brush with the doggy tooth paste on it, and i just cant get a good brush in for her, another problem is that I am forgetful. she usually gets bones a few times a week, but im curious what else you can do? I know there is those dental bones but I here some of them give them the runs.

so basically what do you do for your dogs teeth? what dental bones are good ones to look for, and how often do you give them to them?

I know some of you raw feed and that does a really good job for their teeth, but i do not raw feed, nor do i really know what to give to them for that, so just trying to see what options i have.

thanks

I've bee giving my girls Minties Bones.

http://www.mintiesbones.com/

They have NO wheat, gluten, soy, corn, artificial flavors or by products. My girls seem to really like them. They get one each every Monday. Smile

*note: Shaqua will be turning 12 yrs old in June and she had a vet appt last month where the vet told me her teeth were in excellent condition, much better than they usually see for a dog her age. Apparently I'm doing something right Smile

I give Dental chewing things once a day, I brush her teeth twice a week, and the our Vet offers a teeth cleaning service for not a whole lot, I think it is like 20 bucks.

If you're comfortable with doing some raw, giving turkey, duck, or chicken necks a few times a week can really help. Plus, Korra loves them.
Another option is something like Petzlife, its a gel or spray you apply every day that helps soften up plaque and tartar. It's a great product, but you do need to remember to stay on top of applying it. You just spray or rub the gel along their gum line, so still easier than brushing. The grapefruit seed in this has anti-fungal anti-bacterial properties.
You could also use a supplement, like ProDen's PlaqueOff or Animals Apawthecary's SeaDent. Those are both kelp based suppliments. Just add a scoop to either breakfast or dinner. Both the Petzlife and the kelp suppliments take a few weeks to start seeing results. The variety of kelp they use is also different, but both have emzymes that help break down plaque and tartar, and help the dog's saliva produce these enzymes once it gets into the bloodstream. I like the SeaDent for price and I like Animals Apawthecary in general. This is probably the easiest option.

Yea Im okay with feeding raw, the only thing is, I know absolutely nothing about it. where could i pick up turkey or chicken necks, would i have to go to an actual butcher place or do the sell those at most grocery stores. Do you actually use the Seadent stuff? i just ask cause there are always products out there that claim to do get the job done but dont lol...

I haven't but I have a friend who ordered one. It looks like the paste you put on the brush is also grapefruit seed based, so I would guess it'll work about the same as Petzlife. The only difference really is they lick it up instead of having you apply it to the gums. I'd think applying it to the gums would work better, but maybe harder with pups that don't like people messing around inside their mouth. I'll update if I hear anything good about it, but that'll take a while and depends on how diligent my friend is in using it. Also, unlike Petzlife, they use brown rice syrup and beef/bacon flavoring- probably to make it more appealing for the pups. Hopefully someone else will have some first-hand experience with it.

It depends, I work at a pet store so I get my necks there. You might try asking some little local pet food store companies, if you know anywhere that stocks raw food that's your best bet. Otherwise, you could might see if you can get some from a butcher. I don't know about sourcing my own meat, I have it pretty easy out here in the Seattle area. Lots of great pet food stores that support raw.

I did use Seadent when Korra was eating kibble, and she had great teeth but she was also younger than she is now- so I can't say whether it was her age or the product. Probably both. But now that we're on all raw I don't bother with the Seadent.

I have some spare Seadent if you want it and don't mind it being open. I might actually have an extra unopen one too, I'd have to check my pantry for that. I'm going to the post office Thursday to do some other shipping, so let me know.

Here's a review Val did about the PlaqueOff a while ago:
