Less than two weeks after her second birthday, our beloved guinea pig, Minnie, passed away yesterday. It is with a heavy heart and teary eyes that I write this and remember her the way that she was...happy, active, loving and extremely vocal. Our once wheek filled home is now silent. Minnie lived a happy full two years with us and will forever bring joy to my heart.

Yesterday morning started like any other, I fed all three guinea pigs and cleaned their cage. Minnie was feisty as always and was getting in my way like she does every day...oh how I wish she was in my way this morning. We had gone out for the day and came back in the late afternoon. I prepared the guinea pigs' veggie dinner and brought it to them. Rocky and Jasmine ran over and started eating. As I turned to leave the room I realized that Minnie hadn't come out to the food. I came back and found her on her side unable to move and hardly breathing. I called my husband and we rushed to her and removed her from the cage trying to figure out what was wrong. Less than 30 minutes later she died in my husband's arms. I hope she knows how much she was loved and I am glad that she did not die alone. She has left a hole in our hearts that just cannot be filled.

Sorry for your sudden loss of Minnie, she was a cutie. just remember all the love and great care you have given her, and know she was a happy girl.

Thank you all for the kind words, the last couple of days have been rough...especially on me.

Heather, I don't know exactly what was wrong but there were signs that I ignored that should have told me something was off. I noticed she had been losing weight the two weeks prior to her passing but I didn't think much of it since she seemed otherwise healthy and active. The two days before she passed I noticed that she was unusually quiet, but again I dismissed it thinking maybe she was just more tired than usual or something. Then the morning she died I noticed that there was diarrhea all over the cage when I was cleaning it. At the time I didn't know who had diarrhea but I commented to my husband about it since it was unusual...now I am positive it was Minnie who had the diarrhea. I dismissed all these little clues at the time but in hindsight I realize that this should have alerted me that something was wrong with her. It's just hard since she seemed perfectly fine Saturday morning and just a few hours later she was in a terrible state.

We miss her something fierce. She is buried behind the house and will have flowers planted over her grave come spring. I visit her little grave in the yard every day, she will never be forgotten.

I'm sorry I missed this thread, Val What a rough week for you and your husband. She looks like she was a happy little girl and I love her coloring. What a little character! Take care. RIP Minnie.

She was a happy piggie and our house continues to remain silent. I hate the silence so much and I miss that annoying little rodent always vying for my attention and biting my fingers and sleeves as I clean their cage daily. Today is my normal full cage clean day where I wash and replace all their bedding with clean towels and fleece. I went into the room this morning to start but I just couldn't do it.
