Hey guys I just have a few questions about dog walkers. As some of you guys know I take my dog running with me quite often and I always see dogs that never get off of their chain let alone the yard. So it made me start to wonder about dog walking. What does it take to become one? Do you need some type of insurance to cover the dog you are walking? Anyways feel free to chime in with any information or answers you have whether you use a dog walker or you yourself is a dog walker. Thanks in advance!

I think you just have to be very strong and paitent and responsable (I've thought about being one too) and the insurance thing I'm not sure about I've seen 13-14 year olds walking dogs to make money and I don't think they have insurance sorry if this isn't much help if you find any more info on it please share it with me

If you want to do it as a legitimate business, you do want some sort of insurance or bonding. We hire the kids across the street to let our dogs out in the backyard once a day, but that's as far as we personally will go unless someone is bonded and it's only because we know them and their parents. It's a lot of liability for you, and if something were to happen you would be paying out of pocket vice having insurance to cover it.

On the one hand, you become a fierce defender of the ways in which your little one is perfectly ordinary — all the things he or she can do that are just like what everybody else does. And yet, you never lose sight of how absolutely extraordinary that very ordinariness is, how difficult, remarkable and rewarding that fight to be 'just like everybody else' has been."  -Gwen Cooper, "Homer's Odyssey"

It has been a idea that has been bouncing in my head recently. I often run my dog see the same dogs tied to the same place and I feel for them. Especially the "husky" huskies I sometimes pass that I know would rather have a run than being stuck in a ten foot backyard. I figured this would be my best way to get others thoughts and information. So anything you guys know helps thanks

A couple good friends of mine are dog walkers. If you're really thinking of doing this, definitely get bonded, make sure your insurance doesn't lapse. Even if you don't think anything is going to happen. Even if you are friendly with you clients. Accidents outside your control could happen and people change if they're mad or think they can bully money out of you.
Around where I live we also have "dog runners". If you're athletic, this is a great way to market yourself to people with high energy dogs!

Thanks I will have to look into more information on insurance and bonding. Where I live I have never seen a dog walking company and even in my searches I found 5 company's that say they offer it but mention nothing about it in the description. So I have no where to really ask or guide myself on. Out of the 5 company's that offer pet sitting (which I don't really want to get into) I have never heard of any and lived here my whole life. So I can imagine that they are like that to most people. I just wish I had more sources of information to see if this is something I want to get into.
