Destructive, Bored Behavior Empty
PostSubject: Destructive, Bored Behavior   Destructive, Bored Behavior EmptyTue Jul 22, 2014 2:45 pm

My husky has been showing more and more destructive behavior. We leave her outside during the day with our other dog. So far she has torn branches off of our japanese maple tree, got IN my husbands boat and found a life preserver to tear apart, and she also dug up my parents underground fence one time. We have an underground fence and a stubborn dog collar on her (turned all the way up) which is now keeping her in the yard, but now she's tearing up our yard! I know I need to exercise her more but I am not sure the best way to do it in hot weather. Can I get her to pull something while it is hot outside? I've also thought about getting out my bike so she can run beside it. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated! My husband is at his wits end and is ready to find her another home. I don't want to lose my sweet girl!

Keep her pooped - which is difficult in hot weather. My problem was solved when son get a 4 mo old husky mix pup - he leaves the pup here when he is out of town and the 2 dogs really tear it up. I let them play after breakfast, tether them, they sleep, then again for a bit mid-day with pool, tether them,. they sleep, then it's dinner for them, then in the evening, around sunset, let them off tether for several hours, then walk them. It takes Ami a couple of days to recuperate. (Which he is now done and is back to nose-butting me in the tusch) So, time for more Archer time.

I would suggest either a dog park or find a play-mate that will race around with her. Otherwise, walk your tail off with her (like 4-6 miles per day or more)

By playmate I would add that I wouldn't get another dog her age, but rather take her to doggy daycare, park, or find a friend that has another dog for her to be rowdy with. Adding another puppy will just be double your trouble.

Crate training helped us with our new dog. Our older husky is fine in the house but not the new mutt. He's a bored destructive so now we crate him and the house and he is safe. I run/walk both dogs early in the morning and in the evening. If you have a treadmill you can train to walk/run on it that way the dog can get some exercise during day and cool of the house assuming the dog is old enough.

How old is she? If she isn't at least a year biking and pulling is hard on her joints and not advised. If over a year they would be great options, but in the evening or the early morning when it isn't as hot. Doing either of those in the heat of the day could really harm your dog.

She's 7 1/2 months right now. Do you think the best solution would be to crate her during the day for now? I would only exercise her in the morning or evening, but I don't want to do more harm than good if she's too young. I really wish I had a treadmill!

Actually - I would suggest "borrowing" a playmate - after puppy sitting Archer, I have decided that, rather than 1 dog wanting to be with his people, I would just have 2 dogs wanting to be with their people Laughing

I definitely wouldn't leave her out during the day. Not in the heat of the summer especially and not when I wasn't going to be home for fear of the collar suddenly stop working or someone coming by and just stealing her. This is a problem in our area but perhaps not in yours. Doggy daycare is a great during day alternative that really wears them out. Lots of playmates to borrow if you have one around. Training inside when it's really hot out will help to wear her down mentally as well.

I left her inside in the kennel today. We live in a rural area so I'm not concerned about someone stealing her and I can't afford doggy day care, but I will definietly spend more time training her and walking in the morning or evenings. Thanks so much for your help!
