Squint Eyes Empty
PostSubject: Squint Eyes   Squint Eyes EmptyWed Aug 15, 2018 4:18 pm

Hi Guys,

I was looking for some advice or any previous experiences of this happening to their husky puppy and if there is anything to worry about. I have just recently put a deposit down on a puppy and I am due to pick him up in 3 weeks time. I visited him last week and noticed that his eyes were squint and that they were not focused. As he is only 5 weeks old I brushed it off and put it down to maybe the muscles behind his eye not being fully developed yet. I did not mention anything to the breeder at the time and can't take him to the vet obviously as I currently do not have him yet. Is this a common thing for huskies at this young age and will his eyes start to develop over the coming weeks. Has anyone else experienced this with their dog. I have attached a photo of him where you can see his eyes.

He looks a little zonked-out but for the most part that doesn't seem out of the average. A lot of poor quality huskies have really around eyes and they really aren't supposed to be that way they're supposed to be a little more almond-shaped a little more sleek to be proper. Does he seem like he does see properly? If he isn't focusing that's a different ball game. You want to make sure that he is seeing properly and isn't bumping into things or falling over stuff. Cataracts is something that comes up occasionally and young Huskies but at only 5 weeks old I wouldn't expect to have anything like that interfering with eyesight yet. Good breeders will keep track of this sort of thing in their lines and test for it to ensure that they aren't passing along inherited issues such as cataracts or poor hip structure. What are the other puppies like are they similar or does this one stand out as different? For the most part just from looking at the picture I don't see anything alarming.

He did seem quite zonked-out yes. Why do you refer to my husky as "poor quality"?
In terms of the breeder this is her second litter and the two husky parents are her family pets. I'm not sure if that qualifies for a good breeder or not?

The other huskies did seem more playful and hyper wheres my puppy was more "chilled out". The breeder did say after 2 weeks that she noticed their personalities coming out and that he was the laid back one of the litter. She also explained that she gave him a bath before I came so that could have taken it out of him.

Hopefully his eyes are still developing and are ok. Thanks for the advice

I did not mean that your husky in particular was poor quality I was using talk-to-text and it didn't catch all of my phrase and I didn't go back to proofread. What I meant was that poor quality Huskies often have really round eyes and that is not part of the breed standard. For the most part quality Huskies must fit breed standard and good breeders are breeding to better the breed or meet that standard and not just breeding because they have two papered purebred dogs and that's all they think that they need in order to breed. We usually refer to those type of breeders as backyard breeders. They don't Health test, they don't work there dogs either in show or on the racing circuit, and they only breed to make extra money and simply because they have dogs to breed. A Slimmer more slanted eye set more like what your puppy is showing is actually closer to breed standard than many dogs. It definitely takes a little time for their personality to come out. The big thing is to make sure that they are chill because of their personality and not chill because there's something wrong with them. Best to make sure that it has a thorough check-up at the vet before taking possession of the dog. Runt of the litter can be very difficult and puppies that start out life unhealthy can prove to be extremely expensive in the long run and can cause you a lot of problems if you aren't on top of it from the get-go or not prepared to take that on so you're going to want to know everything that you can possibly know about that dog. I would ask for a lot of updates in the coming weeks video if you can get it and just watch the progression of his personality a lot.

Yes I agree with your point we have not purchased our dog from these professional breeders. one thing we did avoid was “puppy farms” where they mass produce these dogs and have been imported. He has came from an amateur breeder from a family home so could be classed as a backyard breeder to an extent.
Yeah the breeder has been good and has constantly sent us updates. In the videos he has looked more lively so I presume we just caught him on a bad day lol
In terms of his eyes I will have these thoroughly checked by a vet.
Thanks for the advice but like you say no alarming signs at the moment

If he just had a bath, it could be nothing more than soap getting in his eyes to give him the zonked out look. Personally, I don't see anything off with his eyes, he's a very cute puppy for sure. Congratulations! You have a name yet?

PostSubject: Re: Squint Eyes   Squint Eyes EmptyThu Aug 16, 2018 5:03 am

Yes I agree I am probably overthinking it. Thank you I’m really looking forward to picking him up. We have called him bleu. One other bit of advice I am looking for is regarding his jags. I have had mixed reviews with people saying you should wait a week after their second course of jags to take him out and others say that is just a precaution and that after his first set of jags you can start to take him out. I am in a bit of a catch 22 as I know they are social dogs so I don’t want him missing out on interaction at this young age but on the other hand his safety is most important so if he must stay indoors until his second jag then this is what I will do. Any suggestions?

Thanks

A lot depends on your area. Best practice though is to wait until all puppy shots are done before going out in public spots. Parvo has been horrible this year. Even some back yards aren't safe.
