PostSubject: need help, but not really sure what the problem is or if there even is one?!    need help, but not really sure what the problem is or if there even is one?! EmptySun Nov 30, 2014 12:07 am

About 4 weeks ago we moved back to our hometown so that I could start a new career path, we've had trouble finding a pet friendly rental so decided to move in with our parents (me in my parents house and my boyfriend in his parents) until we have enough for a house downpayment.

Jasper is primarily living with me however the boyfriend isn't working yet so when I go to work I drop him off at his house. This arrangement seemed to be working fine but lately we literally have to fight with Jasper to leave my boyfriends in the evenings or leave my place in the mornings, all he wants to do is stay in bed and sleep and once we do get him up he's seems kind of stressed (panting and tail dropped)

I have two theories on why his behavior has changed so much...
1. He's not used to being this active, before we moved hed be in a kennel sleeping from 8-5 everyday while we worked and then asleep from 10:30pm-7am. Now he's active all day. So maybe he's just trying to catch up on sleep?
2. This "joint custody" arrangement is too hard on him and he's stressing out. However I Dont think this is it considering people put their dogs in daycare all the time and this situation isn't really that different.

Sorry for the long post and thank you for reading it all lol. I just want some outside opinions on why my husky has become so lazy and hard to get along with ? They're supposed to be a hyper breed and mines turned into a sleepyhead.

It is a combination of 1 and 2.   This is not the equivalent of daycare at all. This is a total change of his daily routine.

It is very common for a dog to be depressed after a move.  With mine it was almost 2 whole weeks of lethargy, sluggishness, and mopey sleepy time.

I would say give it some more time, don't coddle him at all, be casual and calm around him, and try your best to make anything going on around him as peaceful and normal as possible.  If he wants to be alone and sleep, let him.

He will come around in his own time once a new routine is established, and the quicker you offer that to him the better.

The ideas I offered are psychological, for want of a better word. Keep in mind there is always the possible that something medical in nature is going on.

But panting is one of the surest signs that some type of stress is going on if it isn't related to exercise or heat.

Huskies thrive on consistency and routine. Getting on a set routine and giving him time to acclimate to it will help. When we moved it took several weeks for my girl to settle into her new surroundings and routine. If he has become used to less exercise then getting more will wear him out for a little while.

Question back to all, how much do you think the two "parents" not currently living together is affecting this? Could be a real stretch but I'm thinking something like a kid with newly divorced parents? to far out?

See that was my concern too... He was taken really early as a pup and has displayed some seperation issues in the past but enever anything to worry about.
Should also mention that the panting is only ever at night and just after you wake him up while he's still in bed, so it very well could be heat related.

Ok, I may be crazy but lately, it seems that Ami won't eat his breakfast in the morning until both "Mom and Dad" are in the room...first thing in the morning (as "first thing" as it gets around here Laughing ), Ami wants to locate both of us and is restless until he does. I think this is a function of Archer visiting for half a week and then going home.

Its amazing how much they can act like children.

The latest update on the situation is that once Jasper is anywhere he now refuses to get in the car and leave but is fine once he's in the car and at the new location. For example yesterday at dog park we had to physically pick him up and put him in the truck because he lid down on the ground and fought to stay, which I figured is normal cause it's the dog park and all his friends were there.... But then this morning he left my house and went to the driveway no problem but once again lid down and fought hard not to get in the car and leave.

This is super weird considering he normally lovessss going for rides and is two inches behind you when you go to the door. Oh my, I dunno what I'm gonna do Neutral

Looks like you're gonna wait it out Laughing We had a period where Ami would selectively refuse to either get in or get out of the car...if leaving the house, jumped in with glee, arriving at trailside, hopped out eagerly, leaving trailside...needed treats or pick him up (63# is a LOT of dog Rolling Eyes ), arriving home again, needed treats to get him out of car. That's all past, for now. Probably related to the outdoor dog is now indoor/outdoor at his pleasure and free in the backyard unless we are leaving the property.

I think Jeff hit the nail on the head...they really do need consistency. In the meantime, I would just be matter of fact about all the shift changes for him - soon it will become routine.

In the meantime you could try reconditioning his behavior by rewarding behavior you like (getting in the car without hesitation or indication of stress) with high-value treats. At first you may have to lure him in with treats but once he becomes comfortable and does it on his own, you won't have to and you can just use the treats as a reward along with praise. It does take time but he will get used to his new routine, and with some behavioral conditioning using treats and praise, he may even get there faster and be more comfortable than he would've otherwise.

That sounds like a perfect idea, he's very food driven.
Plus we've had a bit of a "breakthrough" today, I let him stay home and sleep all day and then supper time he willingly got in the truck to go for coffee... So maybe he literally is just lazy and being stubborn about not wanting to do anything lol.

He's also eating, drinking, and pooping like normal so he doesn't seemed to be too affected by it all, he also hasn't chewed his tail since we moved which is usually his telltale stress sign.
