Bandit will not leave my brothers dog cannoli, yorkie poo, alone unless I intervene. She will constinantly bite at his neck. Jump on him. Follow him. Anything. Eventually she calms down and leaves him alone. But cannoli is getting pissed/stressed. Sometimes he is okay with it and sometimes not. No matter how many times I pull Bandit away. Tap her nose. Tell her no she doesn't listen. I have to seperate them. My brother comes over often. Prob at least once a week and I figured bandit would get better. She doesn't. I'm out of ideas. She just smoothers him with attention and will not leave him alone. Any ideas? Bandit is 8 months cannoli is 2.5 years

Hmmm I see what you mean. With bandit I let her do whatever she wants inside and out. Sometimes she get so excited she chase a bone around inside cause she keeps pushing it. Or throwing the ball inside and her zooming around. But I just don't get why she will not ever leave the other dog alone. Literally the other dog gets no breathing room unless I physically hold her back. She wants to play with the other dog 24/7

I would try really wear out Bandit with a lot of exercise before your brothers dog comes over. It sounds like his visits are planned so maybe you can plan to exercise your dog more before he comes over. Usually exercised dogs are calmer and if anything they cooperate better when tired.

The only problem with that is that you can't always physically wear a dog out because guests are coming over.  Abstractly that's good advice, but in reality that is seldom practical in our lives.

When can we really go for a 3 mile run, spontaneously? If we know in advance then that makes it more likely, but sometimes you just have to go someplace or people come over and it's not always possible to provide the needed exercise for a dog to be worn out.

Training, on the other hand, can be used at the drop of a dime, anytime, any place.   A well trained dog doesn't need to be worn out physically.  It helps, but it's not required.

Tony, I think you answered your own question without realizing it ... the part that I put in bold. My dogs are allowed free run of the living area of my house (well, most of it) and are allowed to play up to a point.

I have the back two rooms gated off but they travel through one of them to get outside. Even if I leave the gate open, they know that this is not allowed territory and stop at the gate unless I'm walking them to the back door. The gate was put up because they'd decided that the back bedroom was a good place to defecate / urinate presumably because it wasn't being used as part of the living area. The gate, obviously stopped that. I can now leave the gate open and they respect it, even when it's not closed.

Play time pretty much follows a similar routine, they're allowed to play until they get tired or dad says "enough". When I "draw the line" they normally immediately stop and find a corner to lay down in.

In both cases, though, it wasn't always that way ... it took time, training and consistency (of a sort) to make them understand what I wanted. In the first example, the gate was the "training". In the second, I had a leash on one or the other of them and if they didn't stop I'd just grab the leash and bring that dog to me.

It's pleasant to have a dog who has the freedom to do what they want - but that also falls "within consistent limits". We humans enjoy a lot of liberties, but there are laws and customs that limit what we can do - taking something that doesn't belong to us for example is a no-no. You have to establish those limits with Bandit and consistently enforce them.

Yeah I kind of realize that. I will have to start limiting the craziness around here. Today is day 3 with my brothers dog and bandit is pretty calm around him. I think it's partly to do with we don't interact with many other dogs. Only a few I'm the neighborhood and the blast few months it has been bitter cold
