PostSubject: Supplements to add in with foods?   Supplements to add in with foods? EmptySun Apr 12, 2015 11:33 pm

Hi everybody!
Can't believe it's been awhile since I've logged into this. I've basically been asking questions and participating in our own H2M2 group for Louisiana, and completely forgot about the site. I've asked my question on there, but I'd also like to get a wider range of suggestions, but basically- Ruby hasn't been eating her food like she normally would. I feel like she's been getting awfully bored of her food and we've tried switching flavors up to see if it'd spark some new interests, but nada! She's literally and currently laying in front of her bowl as I type this, on her belly, just staring at her bowl. Lol. So I'm open for any suggestions. Just comment down below the item, and what benefits comes with it. She's currently on Fromm in salmon.

Well as far as things to add to food I have a joint supplement. Nupro All Natural Joint & Immunity Support Dog Supplement. That I add every other day and it makes there food into a liver flavor soup.

I also add coconut oil which they like.

Unrefined or refined coconut oil? I've been wanting to put some coconut oil in their food but I've been hesitant. Lol. How much can they consume a day?

You want organic, unrefined coconut oil. Cold pressed if you can find it. The processing used for the organic cold pressed doesn't leach out as many of the nutrients as other processes.

For food additives for variety in the flavor the oils are a good thing. (Some tell me I created a monster cause my dog now LOVES variety cause he is used to it.)
For the coconut dosage =Start w 1 t for a large dog (unless sensitive tummy then start with less). Start slow and gradually build up is the key as you do not want the runs. Gradually increase the amount every few days of dosing. By the time you have it figured all out you could be up to  1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight daily.
You can also use other oils like fish oil salmon oil or olive oil.
Personally none of my supplements are every day. I rotate all just because ...not sure why I do this probably because I do not want all in everyday but want the benefits of all.  And partly because I use to many different supplements trying to stay away from some chemicals.
Reasons for supplements=
Coconut oil for skin coat and belly,  anti fungal, anti viral, anti bacterial, anti parasitic, increase immunity and moisture plus numerous others
Apple Cider Vinegar for skin coat and belly, arthritis plus numerous others
Salmon Oil for the Omega3s skin coat and anti-inflammatory supplement (arthritis), may also help keep brain functioning sharp in aging dogs plus other things
Garlic for making dogs less desirable to fleas and  is antiparasitic WARNING research this one as feeding garlic can be dangerous depending on dosages.
Glucosamine Chondrotin MSM joint health

Some have told me to check out the Nupro line as then there would be less to do but I like the variety and the research I have done. I believe Valerie had a great thread on here about a lo of supplements but I am not sure of the name of the thread.

Thanks so much @HuskyLear!
I'll have to check out that thread, but you were SUPER helpful. I'll have to check on all of that. I also heard about Nupro and may do that with the coconut oil combo since my girls have had salmon oil before.

get either the organic coconut oil from Costco, or the organic coconut oil from Trader Joe's. Best bang for your buck.

We supplement food with Dr. Harvey's Miracle Food. You cook it with a protein of your choice (we usually use eggs or chicken). We'll replace a meal or two a week with it.

When Anya was malnourished and in poor shape, it worked wonders for her appetite, coat condition, and energy level.

Not long enough, we make our own joint cocktail as I refer to it. My girl Has a slipped disk issue and so we make our own version of nupro, but better Smile and cheaper.
