PostSubject: first coat blow normal??   Wed Mar 25, 2015 9:14 am

I am brand new to this group, and this is my first post, so I hope it goes well! Please help address my concerns about my 11-month girl: She has been blowing her coat, first time ever, for about 9 days now. Her fur seems so much thinner, not patchy, not dull, but so very sparse compared to how it was before. Her coat was not one of the super thick, wooly ones, but lovely and plentiful. Now she just looks, well, sort of pitiful!! Is this normal? She was weaned from her breeder on a raw diet, which we have kept up since we brought her home at 10 weeks, and up until now I felt like she was thriving, the poster-girl of a beautiful, healthy, husky. All other appearances are normal, she is full of energy, playful, eating well .... but her coat is so thin and short, I am worried! I have an appt. with my vet tomorrow, but any comments for today would be helpful.

I am not an expert but it seems to be pretty normal. I hear people say all the time that their husky looked overweight and then after a coat blow they looked underweight. Our girl looked really scrawny after her coat blow. I wouldn't go to the vet for this reason but if you are already going then you may want to ask how her weight is.

I have yet to experience this. I wonder if it is the climate here? Artemis will be a year old next month, and she has never blown her coat. She sheds quite a bit, but never a full out coat blowing situation. She was the first one that I have personally owned, though we had one in the family before her. I hear a lot of people comment about it, and I just haven't experienced it, which strikes me as odd. I have heard a lot of people say that their dogs looked scrawny afterwards.

Nope, Stefanie, climate may play a small part in it but I'm on the desert in south Texas and my two have blown their coats every spring and fall (not sure what the third one will do, yet)

When she finally does blow her coat, you'll know it! Avalanche has a thin coat and a real light blow - and he's underweight anyway so he always looks scrawny (to use your word); Sasha on the other hand has a heavier coat and it looks like she's gained / lost 15-20 pounds depending on whether her coat is coming in or blowing out. Sasha, poor girl, blows her coat all summer long, I can brush her down and get enough to make another dog and two weeks later, do it all again.

I haven't seen anything definitive here, but it seems as if some dogs have their first blow later than others. Climate, food, etc don't seem to have a lot to do with it - that I can see from comments.

She definitely hasn't. She doesn't have a very thick coat in the first place. Maybe it won't be too bad when she finally does! Haha
