PostSubject: Super picky rescue HuskyHELP??   Super picky rescue HuskyHELP?? EmptyTue Mar 24, 2015 7:24 pm

We just rescued Oakley and he is an extremely picky eater. He is underweight at about 46.5lbs and he is 2.5yo. With his size and age, he should be around 60-65lbs max so you can where the dilemma is. He is not eating for us and i have a sneaking suspicious that he wasnt eating at the rescue either. We give him Blue Wilderness Chicken flavor and he literally sniffs once and turns away in disgust. He's still pooping as though hes eating but he doesn't eat at all. We fed him some Freshpet Vital food rolls and he ate those but that seems to be about it. No kibble or anything.
Any secrets/tricks of the trade?
Thanks guys

My Husky is super picky with her food as well. It took me a few months to find the right flavors and brands she liked. When I feed kibble, I use Orijen most of the time, I just rotate through the flavors. I have also used Grizzly Salmon Oil for years to get my Husky to eat her food, it's great for skin, coat, and joints, the only issue you'll run into is salmon breath right after they eat.pale It comes in a pump bottle, so it's really easy to put on their food. If you're still not having luck, try adding some water to the kibble and let it soak in for a few minutes before feeding it. I know some Huskies that are very particular about the texture of their food. If that doesn't work you could also look into the raw diet, which is what I feed most of the time now. You can buy the formulated frozen raw at most pet stores now and it costs less than $5 a day to feed a 50lb dog. My dog has very rarely turned that down. If your interested in Raw, you can look into Stella & Chewys, Primal, Tuckers, or Instinct. They are all ready to serve right out of the bag. Other than that it's just a trial and error process to find the right combo that works for them. A lot of pet store ofter sample bags of food that you can take home and test to see if your dog will eat them, if you find one he likes I usually recommend buying the smaller bags at first until you know he will eat it for more than a day. If you want to find some good advice which food to buy check out dogfoodadvisor.com. They have all the major brands reviewed, and they are the closest thing to a no biased review site I have found. Hope one of these helps! Good luck!

I feed my puppy Orijen and she ate it so fast and she loved it now she takes forever to eat and doesn't even eat all her food anymore. I have tried mixing up the flavors and bought the six fish flavor and mixed it with her puppy Orijen and she still has no interest. My other puppy eats Diamond Naturals and Keytah seems to be interested in it. I have mixed her Orijen with the Diamond and she will then eat. Does anyone know anything about Diamond Naturals if its a good dog food for Huskies and also when she doesn't eat all her Orijen I leave it in her bowl for her to eat later, I know its a pretty high protein food is it okay to leave out or will it spoil?

First thing is of course to rule out any medical problems. He definitely didn't have worms or anything right?

If you want to keep the brand you have try pouring some melted butter on his food. That's what my trainer recommended for loki. If that doesn't work try a different bowl or putting the food on a plate. You could also try moving it to a different room. Since he's a rescue he could have some weird hang up going on. Maybe say "yes" when you give it to him? Some people teach their dogs to wait for the ok before eating.

How much exercise is he getting? Loki eats more voraciously when he's been getting more exercise.

Mine had issues like that. I really don't know what fixed it in the end. I just one day gave him taste of the wild and he friggin ate it! It was the weirdest miracle lol.

Most of the diamond naturals food is in the 4 star range. I feed it and have never had an issue. It is grain free and that is one of the more important things when it comes to huskies. The Orijen won't spoil if left out over night or even for a few days. Usually if a kibble dog food spoils it's because it was left some place hot and humid for a few weeks.

To the OP: Ruling out all kinds of worms is where I would start. What kind of wormers has he been given? If it's only Panacur you might try something with Praziquantel in it instead. It works on tapeworms that panacur doesn't work on. Change in general can make them do odd things. How long have you had him? Going from a low end food like shelters feed to a higher end food can be a slow and frustrating process. The change in exercise, temperature going from no a/c to a/c, and food sometimes it just takes them a bit to find a routine and settle to it. When I first got my girl she had been living on the street in the heat running all the time and coming to live inside where there's a/c and less exercise it took her a while to have routine instead of just doing what she wants when she wants.
