PostSubject: Fencing Ideas?   Fencing Ideas? EmptyThu Feb 11, 2016 2:02 pm

Our new dog is great... but it's really cold here and sometimes I don't want to be outside all that long. Now I can live with that for the rest of the year, but next year I'll need to do something about that. The problem is (I'm sure it's a husky thing, my girlfriends other one does the same thing) it kinda just runs away and follows other creatures to the end of the earth. While the other one is 11 and raised from a puppy it usually stays within the yard bounds (bigger yard) Our new dog was a rescue and it is 2ish years old already.

This is what the back yard looks like.

The front is similarly wooded and a traditional fence would be insanely expensive... What are the other options? I know of traditional buried wired invisible fence but with the trees that would kinda suck too. Is there a GPS based alternative? Do invisible fences work with husky's? I've heard mixed reviews on the subject. Id like to be able to let him out without having to worry about him getting shot or something (its that kind of area and he doesn't look like a traditional husky and hes been shot before). I would kinda feel bad if he could only be on a tie out alone Sad

Side note: we also have part of the yard sectioned off with a regular livestock electric fence with five "very large aggressive ducks" They have done fine with a Siberian husky and German Shepard before we moved with about another dozen chickens and 3 goats too.

Amy a member on the forum, nickname Amymeme, has had great success with the invisible fence, hopefully she sees this post, if not, I am sure she would be fine if you send her a pm asking about it.

Ok thanks for the info. One of my neighbors got some sort of boundary system without a wire and they said it just had modules that you bury at the edges you want? I think it only took the company an hour or two to install. The kicker is they have a very well trained German short haired pointer  thats been trained since birth. Not sure if a somewhat untrained older husky can adapt to that?

Everyone has really big yards here, and horses or other livestock which concerns me if he gets out. He has a huge blaze orange collar so hopefully they will see that Sad

(we used to live somewhere that even common dogs would get shot in the wrong yard.... and I'll be honest I almost wanted to shoot one that got into the chicken run once but I didn't, but it was a hell of a chore to get him out)

It was a neighbor having a party and a pit bull got loose from one of the guests and into the chicken and goat run. we manage to get it on a leash but when they finally drove by and saw what could have been they were wayyyy too nonchalant about the experience!

I'm in the same situation as you, fencing is just too costly, and if either of mine go out of our property line, ranchers here shoot first then ask questions. Amy has a rescue, and he was, if I remember correctly close to 2 when she put in the invisible fence, she installed it herself. She does have a thread if you want to search, maybe type in invisible fence and see if the thread pops up.

I'll look but I had enough trouble cutting roots to get my propane tank to the house... I would never want to recreate that on an acreage level.

As a courtesy maybe ill bring him around the local area and do some door knocks and say look out for this super friendly dog even though he might look scary.

I had to go back and check on what you'd written. "Buried fencing" doesn't have to be buried. You could run a line on the same poles as you have the electric fence on now.

The problem that I've seen with the electric collars is that some Husky's fur is just too think for even the long prongs ...

As far as huskys go his fur seems to be thin. so maybe?

As far as what we have now it is an above ground 4 wire (band) type livestock fence with mesh netting on the lower two levels.

With Miya she has the short fur and I am good. Amy's Ami is a woolie and she has no problems, I wish she were online to see this, she would be the most help. I believe with her system she laid it on top of the ground and then covered the lines. And trained Ami where the boundaries were.

she used staples. Let me see if I can find her thread, it is very helpful. She then covered the lines with brush.

And I was thinking in terms of stapling the wire to the existing posts (or using stand-offs if they're metal posts)
Unlike an electric fence where they have to come in contact with it, the 'buried fences' basically put off a radio signal that the receiver in the collar picks up. I've heard of them being strung on the poles at the top of chain link fences.

The biggest issues you'll find with invisible fencing are 1) how big is the temptation to bust past that fence's warning system....and willingness to come back once that collar is back in range the punishment will start again. 2) keeping things you don't want getting at your dog from getting at your dog. Looks like you are pretty rural, think coyotes, raccoons, bigger predators?, neighbor's dogs, etc.

I'll respond this evening, chores to do. Some places i stapled to the ground, some zip ties to neighbors posture fence (the cows wereamunching it with the grass) and welded areas, just laid on the ground. Electric fence active will distort the signal. Long prong on Ami are fine. If you have existing electric fence, that can keep critterss out. Th yard max I have will only correct outside the boundary and is infinite. The will not getmoreout of shock zone and not be able to get back in though other models that is a problem

I have a stay and play wireless fence. No modules and no wires. Just a collar and a plug in unit that sends signal to the collar. If they go outside the range of the unit's signal then they get bit and it bites until it senses the signal again. So no putting their head down and running through it. It worked fine for my husky when I was using it. I have a full fenced yard now. It had two different prong lengths, one for short hair and one for long.

The only critter I really worry about is the neighbors dog, only because he loves to play with other dogs, it would be a match made in heaven if they could play all day.... Since they can't I dont want a range wireless type device I would like hard boundary's. [i]s there a gps based zone control? invisible fence advertises a gps "2.0" but it seems like a regular wire setup....

I don't know what you mean by a range boundary control. The Pet Safe YardMax is a wired system and the boundary is very stable. Last I checked, the gps based systems were less than desirable BUT that was over a year ago.

I recommend you go to dogfencedyi.com and read all the articles with the pros and cons of different systems.

We have a neighbor that lets their dogs run free. They have occasionally come over to play with Ami and Archer, much to my chagrin as he's a tiny MinPin no bigger than my ski boot Fencing Ideas? 1625187496 neither Ami nor archer had ever attempted to leave the yard too follow him. Stayed in the yard when other neighbors chickens were wandering down the road across from us. Stay in the yard despite the field across from us filled with deer.

I used the standard wire that came with the kit plus a couple rolls more to enclose about 4 acres. Some of the wire is in the ditch in front of the house, a bit is buried where the wire goes to the ditch. The northern border is zip tied to my neighbors welded wire fence (it was just laying on the ground behind the shrubs I planted there but the cows thought the grass was greener on my side of the fence and ate the wire with the grass. At least half of the wire is just laying on the ground in the woods. The only wire breaks in 15 months have been where the cows ate it and once after I moved the wire away from the cows, hubby ate it with the tractor. Hence the zip ties to the fence. If you want to put it in grass so you can now over it, a lawn staple every 10 ft will hold it in place.

I can't remember which, but an active electric fence will either attenuate or amplify the signal from the transmitter. Also, the signal is actual a magnetic field. Nothing blocks it that I've found. And I've tried, i want to put a loop around the house to protect my plants but leave the entrance ways free for the dogs to comes and go.

If you mounted to a fence, the wire can't be too high. The magnetic field is around the wire. If placed to high, the dogs collar could be below the signal.

I really like PetSafe customer support. They've been wonderful. Answered all my questions, if you are a customer, you get a discount on succeeding purchases. Son's collar broke when he took the receiver off to wash the collar part. PetSafe sent a replacement no charge and a mailer to return the broken one.
