Under the Sun and Whole Earth Farms Empty
PostSubject: Under the Sun and Whole Earth Farms   Under the Sun and Whole Earth Farms EmptyMon Mar 28, 2016 11:44 am

Hi everyone,

Has anyone ever heard of/bought Under the Sun dog foods and/or Whole Earth Farms dog food? I am looking into getting my boys onto a new food and since Oakley is still a puppy while Gunner is 4, I am trying to find a line that offers a puppy food as well as an adult food that stays roughly the same price so that when Oakley is old enough, I can feed them the same food without paying a ton more. I also am looking for a grain free option for adults and something that I can buy at my local Petco because of their rewards program.

I looked up every brand they carry and compared prices and these two brands came in at the best price and quality. Just wanted to know if anyone knows anything about these two brands before I decide which one. Thank you!

Would also buy from Petsmart but looking to stay around the $1.50/lb range so if you have any suggestions from petco or petsmart, feel free to share them with me! Smile

Sidenote: After doing more research I found that Whole Earth Farms is made by Merrick but that Merrick was bought out by Purina. Any opinions on this? There are a lot of reviews, some bad but mostly good. As far as Under the Sun, there are not many reviews that I can find on it. :/

I feed Zhukov and Colby Merrick Limited Ingredient kibble. Zhukov had a hard time with food. I mean he will eat anything ( I swear I could grind up a brick, and he would eat it), but his poop was always runny. Merrick, with some pure pumpkin added, really seemed to fix that problem.

Of those two brands I would opt for the Whole Earth Farms brand over the Under the Sun brand. Under the sun is low in protein and high in carbs. Both have grains which is better to steer clear of if possible. It is common for huskies to have grain allergies that will cause dandruff, itchiness, and runny poop. Try to find something grain-free. Whole Earth is better balanced and a 4 star food, just not grain free. If your dogs can handle grains you may not have issues with it. Many hear feed Taste of the Wild. They have puppy and adult lines that are good quality and grain free. You will have to check your local prices to see if that falls in the price range you want, as prices vary from region to region. I currently feed Diamond Naturals and while they don't have a puppy specific line, they are considered 'all life stages' and they too are grain free and much more budget friendly. Quality wise they fall between Whole Earth and Under the Sun, but since they are grain free I see them as on par with the Whole Earth.

My 4 y/o Gunner is a hound mix and I definitely think he has grain allergies, he is currently on a grain free food and doing well. Oakley my husky puppy is not currently on a grain free food but I plan to eventually get him on the same food as Gunner. I am trying to find a food that offers both a grain free puppy option as well as an adult option in my price range. Thank you for your suggestions!

I agree with Jenn, the Whole Earth Farms, they do offer some that are grain free, use potatoes, so I would opt to get the ones that are grain free, just look at the package. Until I see any info that is contrary to how Merrick has always processed their foods, I think you will be fine, just stay up to date with recalls.

Tara, I have been very happy with TOTW and with mine I have no problems changing the flavors so no boredom sets in. Good to hear! Oh and if Oakley is over 6 months old, you can feed most of the adult and skip the puppy formulas, the venison (Pine Forrest), The lamb one (Sierra something), and the Beef and Pork (Southwest canyon), are all life stage food and can be feed to puppies preferably over 6 months old.

Ooh thats good to know! He is just under 6 months so I went ahead and bought the puppy food this time around. I also have a bag of food that I just bought for my older dog Gunner, so hopefully they run out about the same time and I can get them both on the same TOTW!

Tara, yes, that is what I did, Sofie was an inhaler of food, so I did switch her over to the lamb and the venison, they have a slightly larger kibble, and she now chews her food, lol, I did make the switch over at around 5 months with no issues. I also can not feed any kibble with chicken so those two flavors I switch back and forth, I will see as she gets to a year if she can handle chicken, so that way I can rotate between idk, maybe 5 flavors..

Oh let me add, I thought there were 4 all life stages of TOTW only gave you 3, can't remember the 4th, but I am sure it had chicken in it, anyways, you can tell the all life stage ones, because they have a puppy feeding recommendation on the package, the adult only will not.
