Hi, All! Haven't posted in a while! Lutsen is lovin his first MN spring! Its been super nice here...give or take a few rainy days. He has discovered a trick for when he gets too hot though...DIGGING! I've read through some old discussions on ways to break the habit for Lutsen...he doesn't try to escape though so that's a plus! Talked to our breeder and she mentioned trying to use a kiddie pool for Lutsen when it gets hot out...I feel like a few of you have mentioned this to work as well? What are other ways you get your husky to beat the heat and/or stop digging to china lol?!

Very cute and oh yes the digging haha what has worked for me 100% is filling the hole with their own poo and then barrying it and everytime Miya makes this disgusted face and turns away hahaha. For beating the heat I usually give them bowls of ice. I also make some frozen yogurt treats they can munch on. I really want to get mine a dog pool (even though I have a pool all they like to do is drink out of it and drop toys in it) I would definitely try the pool Smile

My dogs love frozen strawberries! It helps keep them cool and provides a nice treat. Not sure about the digging, I have a couple of professional excavators on my hands.

When I first got Kenzi we were in a rental house and had to leave her outside during the day and she dug some massive pits under the porch that she would sleep in during the day when it was warm out.

I have a designated digging spot, they are allowed to dig in one area only and if I see them dig somewhere they shouldn't it's uhuh, and lead them to where they should. And kiddie pools are a must. There is something just too much fun for words so here you go.....

we have a digger! Sam_2013

They took turns playing and chasing and Sofie digs in water like she is digging a hole in the dirt, lol. They played for at least an hour like this, and me and my husband laughed until we cried watching the fun.

Lutsen looks awesome! He's grown so much!

I have diggers. I've tried the poo thing, it does work...for *that* hole. My two will leave that hole alone, and go dig another one. I've done the uh-uh, leading them to designated area thing, and that works too!...when I'm home, when I'm not home, they dig where they wanna dig. Sounds like I'm poo pooing on everyone's advice, lol, but I'm not...these things do work for some, but if they don't work, I just don't want you to feel frustrated that you're doing something wrong. I think if I was home more, I could have been more consistent and possibly curbed the digging more, but I gotta work, lol, so I've resigned myself to the fact that my grass area (the only place in the entire yard they will actually dig) won't be the perfect lawn for a few more years, as it does seem to be a younger husky thing to want as many holes as possible around them. I know it's said huskies dig to keep cool and stuff like that, I'm sure it's true, but like with mine, they have cool places to relax without digging holes, so I'm not sure that's all there is to it. I just this past weekend, brought in a lot of new soil to my grass area to even it back out from all their digging, and first thing Kohdi did was start pawing it, I was just about to say "ah ah" when he stopped and laid down, it was like he just wanted to move the dirt around a little to make a nice little soft spot for himself.

As for things to keep cool, my two absolutely love ice cubes, especially if I don't just hand them to them and make a little game of sliding them across the floor to go chase them Smile the pool thing looks like so much fun though, I may have to get them one. I have the in ground swimming pool, but like with Jane, they just like to drink from it and watch their toys float around in it (or sink to the bottom we have a digger! 1625187496 ) so maybe something smaller they can walk in to would be great for them, unless they go from it to the grass area, and start digging a hole, lol. Ugh.

Good luck Greta!

Luckily, my 8.5 month old doesn't dig. I think he did once, filled the hole with poo and never dug again. I have a kiddie pool too, and he loves it. Now with the warm weather approaching, he puts his paws in the pool to cool down. Digging is a way to cool their bodies.. my previous husky destroyed my father's prized garden lol... he eventually stopped as he reached adulthood but the damage was already done bounce bounce ... a kiddie pool is well worth the investment, just make sure to change the water often as he/she will most likely drink out of it too..

Jimmy thank you for your input! Like anything else in life, parenting, raising pups etc i feel like the general rule of thumb is one size does not fit all or one way does not fit all in this case! We did get him a kiddie pool over the weekend and i think he's getting used to it! Definitely not willing to play splish splash just yet...We went for a loooonnggg walk yesterday probably the longest one to date, and I could tell when we got home that he was thinking "ok i'm kindof afraid of this pool but i feel like it's the only way I'm going to feel better!"

Let us know if you get Mishka and Kohdi a pool...it would be so fun to see pics of them splashing around!

Thanks sarah! Yeah we have just started landscaping at our new house...I know...MAYBE not the best timing to get a husky this winter...what can I say? We were ready to take on the challenge! If it's not one thing its the other I feel like. A friend of mine has a husky that continues to escape from their yard despite several different attempts to prohibit it. Lutsen "knock on wood" hasn't escaped or tried to once...so I guess discovering digging while its an ANNOYING trait of the breed I guess i'd rather opt for that vs. Lutsen getting loose and jumping fences! He's still young though so who knows!

I will definitely remember to change the water...Lutsen might be doing more drinking out of it then playing in it for awhile.

Love you pup's coloring by the way! So cute Smile

Dawson LOVES his pool.... He jumps into, splashes around, bolts across the yard getting his paws all muddy and then jumps back in. There is no clean water in Dawson's life. Always muddy! He is a very funny puppy. We had to get him a special bowl for drinking because he would always dig the water out.

Look how cute he is!!! Awww he is a little water lover! Lutsen's getting more and more used to it but it hasn't been an easy transition like I've seen with other dogs.

Thanks! He definitely is a water baby. I'm going to have to plant grass in our yard just to keep the mud out of my kitchen. Hopefully Lutsen will like water. It helps to keep them cooled off. Dawson also loves ice. He comes running when he hears the ice maker and jumps to knock the glass so ice will fall into his mouth or onto the floor for him. LOL
