Second Puppy Potty Troubles Empty
PostSubject: Second Puppy Potty Troubles   Second Puppy Potty Troubles EmptyThu May 26, 2016 12:18 pm

Hello everyone,
I have been around here in the past and you guys were helpful with my original husky Jethro. We just picked up a new female, born 3/10/2016. Her name is Ziva. We picked her up from a local breeder from the akc. The breeder had been feeding her Purina Pro Plane large breed puppy food. As with our 3 year old male husky, we are currently feeding her twice a day 3/4 of a cup. We have been transitioning to totw puppy food, with a 1/2 and 1/2 mix.

The situation is that Ziva poops in her crate. We never had this issue with our male. We feed Ziva take her out after feeding her and she goes poop. We then crate her for 1-2 hours. For the past 4 days we open the crate to finding poop covered up by her towel. She does not whine prior to pooping. The crate size is just large enough for her to turn around. She has only been eating one to two small dog treats for praise from using the yard. She is pooping 6-8 times throughout the day. Sometimes she poops in the crate, sometimes in her play pen and mostly in the yard. She does not pee in the crate.

The breeder had the pup until about 10 weeks and said that ziva never pooped in the crate in her care. I am wondering if the dog food is causing her to have loss of control of her digestive track? Do you guys recommend us taking her to the vet. We are scheduled to take her to her 3rd deworming session in a couple weeks. Her stools are softish, but not runny.

Overall she has a ton of energy, she rarely whines in her crate. I am currently taking her out twice at night. She will go pee outside during these times, but will be placed back in her crate, where sometime in the night she will poop in the crate. She whines after she poops in the crate.

Any help you be greatly appreciated.

Hey Alex......how was her poops when she was eating only the pro plan? Or have you added the TOTW from the very first day you brought her home? My new puppy had the same issues, no pooping in her crate, but she went a lot...2 things we noticed was that the high prairie seemed to be too much protein and had chicken. so if you are feeding the high prairie I would switch to TOTW Pacific Stream Puppy and see how she does on that. Once I switched her poops were firmer and instead of like 10 times a day she went closer to 4. I do suspect that the purina pro is what is bothering her with it having grains, and so I don't normally tell people to make a complete switch it may be best to suffer through poops a little while longer and completely stop feeding the pro, and start the pacific. Let us know how it goes, and we need pics of your pups, haha.

Yep. We are using the high praire currently so I will go ahead and make the switch. How much were you giving her per day of the Pacific?

When you take the puppy outside, do you just let her in the yard until she goes, or do you take her for a walk? If you only let her in the yard, I would recommend a walk. It'll stimulate her bowels so she empties them completely. Sometimes puppies don't poop all the way when they're in just out in the yard. I found regular walks helped a lot with my dogs.
