PostSubject: Need Advice! Breeder near New England? Are these reputable breeders?    Fri Oct 14, 2016 9:04 pm

Hi fellow Husky lovers Smile

I've been trying to find a Siberian Husky for nearly six months now, but seem to be striking out at every turn. It's been nothing short of a nightmarish expedition. I've found it so difficult to find a reputable breeder who will talk to me and answer my questions without getting defensive, and then in turn scaring me off, and the two times I had strongly considered making deposits, poor reviews have scared me off. I just want my pup so bad, and I cannot seem to find her.

The last one that scared me off, although I'm still considering, is these guys - bestakcpups dot com

They have the ideal Siberian Husky I want. I'm flexible, I know and respect the fact that breeders do not, nor should they, breed for fur or eye color, but she has a perfect little white female pup which is kind of my dream scenario. I've read some not-so-good things about that breeder, and then I've also read some good reviews, too, so I'm torn. Completely torn. They are also about 20 hours away, but travel is not the biggest problem in the world if it's for the pup.

I've also been considering littlehandsomesiberians dot com which seems like a relatively new breeder. That seems scary to me, but the saving grace here is that I have a very close friend who knows them, and swears by their character, but they are also very far away.

I live in the New England area, I know there are breeders in Maine, MA, NH, etc. But I could really use some help finding the good ones, so any advice you have on the 'finding a breeder front' and then any opinion you experienced dog owners may have on the two links I dropped above, would be excellent.

Thank you!

Hi HuskyLife and welcome to our forum ... as a comment, many of our members will be out playing with their pups over the weekend - and other things that don't normally involve work! so you may not see many responses till Monday or so.

I'm not a breeder - shoot, I'm 70, I'm not going to raise dogs who will probably outlive me!  But I do have a few things I look for when it comes to breeders.   My first thought is that Aruff doesn't look like a BYB, but there is something about them - and I can't quite place it - search ...
Since there are only a couple of threads that come up mentioning Aruff / BestAKCPups so I'll just put the links in.
New Mommy Questions and Thinking about getting a Husky and Looking at breeders
That should give you a pretty good idea of what we generally think of Aruff ...

As far as the second one goes, they got their first Husky in 2014 and are now breeding!  Say What!!!!!!  In two years they might be beginning to get a good handle on Huskies as a breed but - in my book - certainly don't have the experience to be good breeders.

BTW, if you use the search function here, I've gotten a lot better results if I go to the advanced search, enter my word(s) and hit Google search.  That returns only hits on our site but will return many that won't come up at all - for me - in a simple search.

Welcome Huskylife, Al gave you awesome threads to read thru. Bestakc is not the place to go, the more pretty stuff a kennel's website the less reputable they are, so run as fast as possible from them. I suggest going here http://www.shca.org/shcahp4f.htm it lists most of the reputable breeders in the US by state. I wish you luck, and please ask as many questions as you may have, we are happy to help. Smile Oh forgot to mention on the second breeder, I say no to them as well, the quality breeders will not breed a male or female until minimum of 2 years old and all OFA hip and eyes have been tested and cleared. An animal should be worked or has done some show ring, to prove themselves, and lastly a breeder needs to be well aware of the temperament of the 2 dogs they are going to breed, typically 2-3 years of age is best to start breeding.

I did take a look at the second breeder, and ugh.....the male is definitely out of standard, the female looks too young, they have no lineage to show where the dogs come from, they do not show nor work their dogs. No health certs as well, no OFA hip and eye tests, heck I didn't even go to see what type of contract they offer, because there is just too much wrong. They bought 2 huskies that they believe are beautiful, which they are and said hey hun think about how much money we could make with these, since they are so very beautiful, everyone will want one. Sorry., nope that is not how you start to become a good breeder. Please look more, you will find your perfect husky companion thru research and patience.

Renee, that's an excellent list! I haven't seen it before, that I remember, and it sure looks like a good place to send people who are looking for a Sibe Breeder who isn't doing it out of their backyard.

Thanks Al, I have and huskymom and others have posted the breed club's website before, I just decided to skip steps and post up the actual breeders list, it does provide a list of breeders who are in good standing with The Siberian Husky Club of America, which is a way better list of breeders vs AKC. Why do you want a husky from a breeder? Not trying to ruffle any feathers here, just curious. Sometimes people are looking for a dog for competition, and are looking for a certain pedigree that can grant them an edge. Sometimes people are looking for a dog for a specific reason, and again want to find a certain pedigree. Totally understandable!

But I find a lot of people are just looking for a companion, a pet, a friend. Getting a breed standard dog to fill that roll isn't really a necessity. I did a quick search in the NE area and discovered several white husky or husky mixes in the area. A few with bi-eyes even.
People in my home town get specific breeds from breeders all the time and then basically never do anything with the dogs, it just seems like such a waste to me. Seriously, everyone here needs to have hunting dogs that come from great hunting stock, and they pay hundreds to thousands of dollars for them...and the dogs only ever go outside to relieve themselves.

I also find puppies to be a lot like babies. Great to hold, see, visit, and play with, but a major pain in the arse to live with. Getting a slightly older dog from a shelter may not be as cute, but can certainly be easier to adapt to.

If you are having trouble finding a breeder to work with, maybe take a look at the shelters in your area, or petfinder. Heck, there is even a couple husky focused rescues in the NE area from the look of things. As a bonus, adopting a dog can be quite a bit cheaper also.

The most important thing though is finding the perfect dog for you, and if that means a breeder, then more power to you! I wish you the best in your search!

I will second that starting with the Parent Club's breeder referral, especially in your area, would be highly recommended. With the parent club's breeder referral list you have a certain number of guarantees going into contacting a breeder. First, these breeders are DOING things with the dogs they are breeding. This is a good thing, proving the dogs to form and/or function should be high on a breeder's priority list. Next, they are health testing their lines. This helps give you some assurance that steps were taken to prevent the transmission of heritable disease. There is nothing wrong with looking at breeders, but please research responsibly. Not every breeder is breeding with you (the buyer) or the future of the breed in mind.
