Finally picked out my puppy! Empty
PostSubject: Finally picked out my puppy!    Finally picked out my puppy! EmptyWed Nov 16, 2016 11:46 pm

So I ended up skipping the Halloween litter and picked from a different litter entirely.
It was weird because I was set on a female puppy but ended up noticing this litter and fell in love with two pups from it.

Right now he looks like a rat-- I've seen puppies before but I think since he's white he looks a bit alien to me. I know he'll be a beauty though!

I was torn between him and a black/white puppy from the same litter. Though now I'm nervous. Is it hard to keep their coat white? My breeder recommended a product that she said helps. I don't care if it gets a little dingy but obviously I want him to look as best as possible.

Also, any extra tips on his first couple nights home? I'm picking him up between 8-9weeks. My only puppy experience was a 4 month old that needed to be rehomed so he did well when I got him. But I know some kittens I fostered completely lost it once I started rehoming their siblings. Broke my heart. Sad

I don't have a name picked out yet, but when I do I'll start a scrapbook for him. Thinking about Bolt since my other dog's name is Flash. But I also like Fenrir.

I know you want to bring him home, but he should stay with his mom, brothers and sisters until 12 weeks. It will be better for you if he does. And it will be better for his socialization.

@Starfire, White husky is rare to see, sometime they would have a hint of grey or red when they get old. Just go with the one your heart tell.

Don't forget training pad it could save your floor.

@Jalepeno, 12 weeks? I thought 8 weeks would be good enough? Please kind advice.

@GrizzlyandCharcoal...I thought similarly, but 8 weeks is actually the minimum age to start seperating the litter, with it ideally being 10-12 weeks. Some of the reasons included things like the pups solid food being supplemented by its mothers milk , and of course the mother teaching it's babies "manners", etc.  It is commonplace, and not necessarily a "bad "thing, for breeders to let the pups go at 8 weeks, but many reputable breeders do have one wait until they are around the 12 week age.

That being said, I picked up Kohdi from the breeder at 9 weeks and Mishka at 8 weeks and they are doing great.

In small breeds they should stay with their litter mates longer, in Siberians it is fine to place puppies at 8 weeks of age. Some breeders will hold onto a litter longer if they need more time to decide which puppy they want as their keeper, identifying desirable traits, etc. The real red flags are the breeders who place their puppies starting as early as 4 weeks. Personally I prefer a slightly older more settled puppy, Keegan has been my best puppy to date and he came home extremely late at 22wks.

Whites are not so much rare, but not as common to find a quality white. In Siberians white is the result of an extreme pibald factoring. So genetically the dog will be determined by the color of pigment. So a white dog with liver colored pigment is genetically red, where a white with black pigment would be genetically black/gray factored. As such you may see some hints or shading of colors appear as they get older. A good whitening shampoo is a must for a white. I will bathe mine at least 2 times per year, in-between if needed depending on what we are doing.
