PostSubject: Penis hairs   Mon Mar 14, 2011 11:11 pm

Everyone, please begin your responses with "Awww, Lisa, there are NO stupid questions!"

I've never had a male dog before and this guy has this thin little strand of hairs hanging off of his penis sheath. Everytime he pees he runs around afterwards with little drips of pee rolling down those hairs. They are always yellow and "icky" looking. I even occasionally hug him and touch wet, nasty penis hairs... EWWWW!

Is the any reason why we couldn't just snip those hairs off a little bit? They are probably a little over an inch long now.

Ok now that I stoped laughing I will say that its been a long time since I have been around a puppy, other then eddys new addition.but I'm sure they will grow into the hairs as jack does not have that issue. Maybe u can have a towl around to wipe the area when he is done peeing?

Hahaha....if you're really careful, I don't see any harm in trimming around that area. Puppies are messy and trimming can help keep them cleaner.

Aww Lisa there are no stupid questions.
Frankie's was nasty when he was younger. I actually asked my vet at one of our check ups because I thought he had some kind of infection or something. I always had to wipe it clean, but he kept himself pretty clean too. Once he was neutered the "icky" pretty much stopped. The groomer actually recommended trimming the hairs around the wee wee to keep it cleaner. As he got older he pretty much keeps it clean himself and he grew into the hairs so it's not bad at all anymore.

OMG LOL LOL!!! Wow, this made my morning =) Ok, so it's totally normal. Kody is 6months and has the same icky wee wee hair issue. I try to wipe it down when it's looking too icky. I think, and hope, that it will go away!

I trimmed it. Then a bit later realized that nature typically does things for a reason. My hypothesis is: this feature directs the stream more efficiently than puppy bladder pressure can. (He pees all over himself since I trimmed it.)

Hmmm... Given the fact that most of you are saying these hairs will either go away or be a non-issue for an adult male dog, I am guessing Eddy is correct and they are there for a reason. Perhaps I will leave them and wipe them occasionally. He usually cleans himself after going potty, but it's the time after peeing and before cleaning that he is all "drippy".

Good grief... I wanted his cute little black and white sister....

It's not a stupid question, Lisa! There is a reason! The hairs help direct the pee to the ground so that you don't get pee spraying all over, perfectly normal and functional. It may or may not go away, if it doesn't just wipe him off with a towel or something for sanitary reasons. My boy actually cleans himself which is gross but at the same time wonderful for me because I don't have to clean him off. lol

Awww, Lisa, there are NO stupid questions!

When we brought Mikko to the vet for the first time, she asked me if we had any questions or concerns. This was the first thing I brought up lol
She basically told me what everyone else has said- that it acts as a wick to direct their urine. I asked if I could cut it off and she said I could but make sure I'm not cutting off any ahem....well you get the picture. I decided I'd leave it there to avoid him peeing down his leg...and I'm very careful on how I pick him up now.

UPDATE: Sabaka is 6 - 1/2 months old and for the last couple weeks his urine stream has been SO strong it hits the back of his front legs. Good grief... more wiping pee off of the boy!! Rolling Eyes

However, I noticed his penis hairs are nearly non-existant. So you guys are correct, they were there to direct the weak urine stream and now that the urine just shoots outta there... they are going away!

Today, I am happy to report, he has lifted his leg a couple of times! The first time he did it he lost his balance and nearly fell over! Laughing But he's getting it! So hopefully no more wiping hairs or front legs...

Funny that you posted this Lisa! Last night on his walk Kody attempted to lift his leg on a tree for the 1st time! I was like OMG OMG he's trying..lol. He's 9 months though so it's taken him a while. His pee stream (lol) is pretty strong also and I've had to clean his front paws too Shocked

Yep, lifting the leg will take care of that! The few times that my boy doesn't lift his leg (which is rare) he sometimes ends up peeing on his front leg. Luckily he almost always lifts his leg. lol One of the joys of male dogs. Razz

Kody has a hybrid way of doing it also..lol. He'll lift his leg SOMETIMES, but for the most part he just stands really still and pees...doesn't squat at all, but you can tell that he's peeing..lol

Ha ha. Frankie too! He only lifts his leg if he is peeing on a tree, pole, or bush. When he pees in the grass he has the hybrid way. However he has been know to start walking before he is done peeing or just walk while he is going. He use to always manage to get pee on the front paws Question Now it's only occasional, but it still happens.
