Doggy Daycare Woes Empty
PostSubject: Doggy Daycare Woes   Doggy Daycare Woes EmptyMon Apr 17, 2017 6:27 pm

Last week, the doggy daycare where Bodhi has been going twice a week for four years told me that I need to find another place for him.
Apparently, he and another dog were fence fighting when they were in adjoining kennels before being introduced to the rest of the dogs at the start of the day. After an hour in the general population, he ran over without provocation and bit the other dog in the head. Several weeks ago, he did something similar with another dog. The staff told me that if I bring him back, he will be in a kennel and get no exercise when he's there. They said that their restrictions are for the other dogs' and his safety.

I am really stumped about this. Bodhi is not an aggressive dog.He is enthusiastic and eager to play with other dogs. He genuinely likes to go to daycare. I have seen no changes in his behavior at home. He has no physical issues. He interacts with other dogs we meet the same way he always has. His diet and exercise amounts are unchanged. The staff at the day care has not changed. No changes at home.

Bodhi is only at the daycare for about four hours, twice a week. But I do rely on them to take care of him when I travel. That's the part that will really impact us if I have to take him to another kennel (AKA "The Slammer")  that isolates the dogs.

If any of you have any ideas about what is going on, please let me know.

Are you positive that the staff isn't just misinterpreting husky play? The bite Bodhi gave the other dog in the head, did it leave a mark?

He did not break the skin.
They have other huskies there, and mals.
A giant malamute is Bodhi's pal.

To me, an aggressive bite woulda done some kind of damage, but, I don't know. Without actually seeing what happened and just going by what they say, it's hard to know for sure, especially since you havnt witnessed any changes or aggression from Bodhi, at all. It's too bad they can't just let the snow dogs have their own space together.

Any possibility that Bodhi got attacked, threatened or hurt by some other dog that may have precipitated this?

Also - a while back (long while back) when I was researching tethering versus kenneling for dogs, I ran across a Cornell study that found fences can be a trigger for aggression with another dog. I see it here when Ami and Archer are in the fenced backyard and other dogs are on the outside. Doesn't happen very often because we're in the boonies, but it certainly is recognizable.

Sorry to hear about the troubles. Is it a new staff dealing with him? Jax and Ziba play very rough, and it takes certain staff to know the play fighting is coming and to stop it before it happens. Jax has already been banned, after one day, from a daycare in the area, but the one we take him to occasionally deals with him very well. Sometimes he gets the thunder shirt, sometimes the gentle leader, and sometimes I have to have them walk him so he can unwind. You may just have to find a daycare that actually works with the dogs rather than dump them in a play area and react after a fight occurs.
