Getting Pups Attn When He's Over Stimulated Empty
PostSubject: Getting Pups Attn When He's Over Stimulated   Getting Pups Attn When He's Over Stimulated EmptySat Jun 03, 2017 1:47 am

I have an almost 5 month old Great Dane/Husky mix...he's essentially a husky trapped in a dane's body. Looks like a dane, personality all husky.

I read this thread: https://www.itsahuskything.com/t16746-correcting-too-rough-play

and I'm in the same situation but didn't want to hijack that thread. My dane/husky is biting so hard on my sharpei's face that she's bleeding. I initially thought the blood was from his teeth because teething but nope, her face is bleeding.

When the husky pup wants to play he gets right up in her face and bark as loud as can be and bites her face. He sounds like a freaking demon dog. Other people think he's attacking. He's played this way since I got him at 8 weeks.

Oddly enough my sharpei is not dog friendly. At all. But for some reason, she puts up with his crap. She rarely corrects him to the point where it snaps him out and he stops biting her.

So...I am hoping someone can give advice on what to do to snap him out of his play when he's overstimulated and doesn't listen. I use "enough" command when it's getting too rough...but only my older dog listens/knows what it means, not the husky pup. Which means she just stops playing and runs away, which means he chases her and bites her more without her defending herself. Grrr.

Since noticing the bloody face, I've tried to not let them play this way....as soon as he starts, I tell him gentle, kisses (licking), no biting. Sometimes it works. Most times not. And I have to take him away. If I can catch him :/

The thing is...the sharpei usually only starts playing when he instigates, and she loves playing so I don't want to stop ALL his instigating. But I need the husky pup to tone it down a notch, and I need a way to get his attention when I need them to stop.

AND...it can't be a loud noise....because the sharpei, a rescue, is very anxious and scared of all kinds of noises. And the husky is apparently immune to any noise. So any noise maker, pet corrector, etc just scares the crap out of the sharpei and the husky pup just keeps on going.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure if clicker training will work for this, for me personally I would use and have done so, used a squeaky ball to grab attention for my gsd, my husky, thankfully understands enough, be gentle. My gsd on other other hand, is like your sharpei, she gets beat up, by my husky and it sounds horrible, and loud, etc, and one of them will sometimes get a scratch, so it does come with the territory. anyway, back to the squeaky ball and how I use it with my gsd, Sofie, the gsd, is still very puppy acting, and on occasion, mainly when she was younger, not listen to stay or ignore me on sit or lay down let's go, ah yes see a pattern, lol, anyway, I would carry a squeaker ball, anything that squeaks, and squeak it when she ignored me, she would stop and look at me and then do my command. So in your case he starts playing rough and squeak the ball if he looks at you say specifically "his name" enough, be gentle or sit or your recall or anything else to make him stop, treat if he is treat motivated. If a squeak toy is too loud, I wonder if you could use a clicker instead to grab attention. I hope that can help. Smile Pretty pup

Yes I've tried distracting with toys and balls and squeaks. I use his name before each command. None of those work. He totally ignores me and continues his play.

I guess I have a special situation bc although he is highly food motivated and I use food to train him in everything else....my rescue sharpei is also a resource guarder, so we can't use food in this situation to teach the husky bc the sharpei would fight for the food.

I guess I don't know much about clicker training and that's why I haven't tried it. I am afraid I'd click at the wrong time. If I'm not 100% confident in the training method I feel like I'm gonna screw it up and make things worse.

I might try the pet corrector again. Even though it scares the crap out of the sharpei and the husky just ignored it. I don't know what else to do to grab his attention. I guess I also don't have any kind of solid sit, down, enough or any command yet. Grrr

Getting hit in the face with a shot of canned air settles mine right down. You may be able to attach her to a long line also when they play so that if you need to correct her you can catch her without having to chase her which is just more game for her. Make her sit in time out once caught. Basic training goes a long way in building respect between you and your puppy. Definitely keep pushing for solid command control and you will have a better shot at getting the off command to work.

I have to laugh anytime someone mentions canned air. I use it for my computers, of course, since this area is dusty!! I haven't used it on the dogs, but if Avalanche sees me pick one up, he's heading for safety.

Also, as Jenn notes, an in-house leash can be a lifesaver if she won't listen.
