| So Bane, my 10 m.o. husky, just got neutered and had one testicle removed from his abdomen due to crypotchidism. He needs the cone of shame because he wants to lick SO bad. Since I got him home he won't sleep. He's just laying down crying non stop (unlike him-he is usually silent does not bark howl or whine). Occasionally he jumps up and waddles around almost as if he got a sharp pain. He seems so so so miserable. What can I do to help him? The incision sight looks awful. Bloody discharge and swollen and frankly just all cut up. I trust the vets and know they did a good job but ugh, my poor baby. |

| Ouch, as long as the vets think the wound looks normal and is healing properly. Did they not give him pain meds? You can give him baby aspirin and hopefully that will give him some relief. If the vet didn't give pain meds you may ask them for some. Let them know bane is having trouble. How long ago was he neutered? _________________ |

| If Bane just had this done, like today, I'd say it's pretty normal in a way. I take the symptoms you describe as coming off of the anastesia. My vet didn't recommend the pain killers afterwards (all vets are different though). Kohdi initially (the day of the procedure) had the urge to lick but once the anastesia wore off, he was good, no cone of shame for him (Mishka either) .
The things to help him...id say just try to let him rest it off, no jumping or running around, just calm and relaxed around the house.
While Kohdi mostly wanted to sleep afterwards, I do seem to remember Mishka doing some whimpering and sudden movements caused her to cry a bit, but that only lasted a day or two. Like Jenn said though, if you feel something isn't right, let your vet know. |

| I would echo what has already been said. If this was done yesterday that is typical behavior coming off of anesthesia. I always take home pain meds from the vet, if they don't offer then I ask. I take them without the intention of using them fully but having them if need be. You don't want your dog to feel like nothing happened but it is beneficial to have something to take the edge off if they are particularly uncomfortable...especially if it's the middle of the night and the whole house would like to get some rest. You want your pup to be able to relax enough to rest for the recovery process but not be so comfortable that they over do things when they should be recovering, there needs to be some balance.
And yes, keep in touch with your vet. Most will follow up and want to know how he's doing the next day. Tell them how he's doing and your concerns and follow their advice. Better safe than sorry. Hope he's doing better this morning. _________________ |

| Thank you everyone, he is a bit better today. The whining was definitely from anesthesia because he stopped doing that a few hours later. He hates his cone and still really really wants to lick the incisions but we are just trying to watch him like a hawk and manage it. I've read that the need for licking calms down after a few days. His incisions look terrible but I described them to the vet today and she said it's normal- he's not outwardly bleeding and he's eating/drinking just fine so I'm not super concerned about it. |
