PostSubject: Got my first husky puppy and just found out that the breeder let her go to early   Tue Oct 03, 2017 2:07 pm

Hi everyone,
So I just bought my first Husky puppy and she is only 6 weeks. I took her to the vet yesterday and they said she was in perfect health but on a Facebook group I found out that the breeder should not have let her go until 8 weeks! Why she did, I have no idea. I know the breeders family is going out of town so I don't know if that is why but either way now I'm panicked. The vet did not even mention it was to early when I took her. She is perfectly healthy, eating, playing, snuggling, and even getting along with my other dog. The only problem that has been occurring is she whines a lot at night. Any advice please? I know I should not have gotten her this early NOW. I didn't know when I picked her up.

A lot of vets won't even bother to go down the road of bringing home a puppy that is too young because you've already done it so it's just time to move forward and do what you pay them to do, check your pup over. Luckily, it isn't the end of the world. Just could make some things harder like mouthing. They learn a lot of bite inhibition from their litter mates and she has missed out on a solid two weeks of it. If she gets to biting yelp and ignore her as her litter mates would do. Hopefully that will be enough to help teach her how much is too much. Once she has all her shots you can look into taking her to puppy classes. If you have a petsmart or petco nearby they often have puppy socialization time an evening a week where people can bring their puppies and they can just play and teach each other how much is too much.

Some have tried hot water bottles laid just outside the crate so she can lay against it and feel like she is near her siblings for comfort. Having some toys she can cuddle with at night can help as well.

Thank you! I've been told that it'll be a little easier because I have another dog (she's a year older) and they said that she can learn from her like she would've learned from her litter mates. Is this true?

It is true, but I fear not totally so. That you have another dog close enough to her age is going to beneficial to her learning many of the things she would have naturally learned while in the kennel but socialization and bite inhibition, to name just two, re the things learned best 'en familia.'

As Jenn said, all is not lost by any stretch - that you know the breeder <questionable?> let her go too early puts you in the position of being the mother she didn't get enough of and that she has a 'sibling' will also help a lot.

Stick around, you've got a world of experiences ahead of you and most will undoubtedly be enjoyable share those if you would and we'll be here to help with the times that you feel like saying "I'm gonna kill that little ..." and I guarantee there will be a few (only because she's a Husky, not because she came home too early!)

Thank y’all so much!! I also didn’t mention that my younger sister has one of her sister. We live in two different houses (I have my own house) but they can see each other every day. Will that be good? One person said not to let them see each other now because then she won’t bond with me.

If your other dog gets along well with the puppy and is patient with her, she could potentially be a big help.  Hanging out with sister could also help.  I think that typically, pups that are separated from their litters too early and don't receive additional training/socializing tend to become either very timid or the opposite, very dominant. The puppy-biting stage could be particularly difficult.

I had an American Eskimo Dog (Eskie) that we "rescued" as a puppy from an elderly couple (actually, I think THEY were the ones in need of rescuing) whose well-meaning daughter thought he'd make a good companion for them.  I never knew for certain, but I suspect he'd come from a puppy mill and was sold to this girl too early. By the time we got him, he was an absolutely gorgeous, adorable, vicious Alpha-Male dictator of a puppy. We did all of the training and socializing with him that we could, but the ONE thing that finally made him calm down was when we also rescued an older, calmer dog -- our Lapphund. The Lapphund was a very easy-going and good-natured dog, but he was no pushover.  He helped a great deal in getting the Eskie in line and KEEPING him in line.  The Eskie became downright cuddly after that.

With your pup being younger than my Eskie was when I got him, and with you being aware of any potential problem she might have, your pup already has huge advantages that my Eskie didn't have.

I also got my husky at 6 weeks, mostly my fault.

2 hour drive to breeder. When she showed us two female black/white puppies, 8 weeks old I mentioned that she said there were 3 available. The other puppy was from a different litter and 6 weeks old. Since we made the drive we asked if we could see her and that was the one we wanted.

She reluctantly let us take her and we had shots, exam, etc the next day. Our vet also didn't mention getting her early and as mentioned above, we already had the dog.

She'll be 7 months old next week. The only problem we see is with biting but only my wife and I. No problems meeting strangers.

Good luck with your new puppy.
