PostSubject: my husky is all of sudden afraid of climbing up the stairs to my apartment   Husky - my husky is all of sudden afraid of climbing up the stairs to my apartment EmptySun Nov 26, 2017 7:14 pm

Arya is 1-1/2 years old and all of a sudden she wont climb the stairs to my apartment.
This started 4 days ago.
I took her to the vet and they found nothing physically wrong with her.
My son has to lift her to bring her in.
I am unable to lift her, she is too big for me to lift.
Anyone have this problem.
I am worried about her.

If everything else is the same then all I can say is "That's odd!"

I live in an older house trailer and my steps were just a stack of bricks ( cinder blocks / masonry blocks / whatever ) On the one hand they'd roll when I walked up and down - not a lot but enough to bother me (er, I'm 70 and don't need any broken anything!), on the other hand this was the porch I had for the morning / late evening potty call and one dog or the other would catch their chain in the bricks and pull them apart (( you *really* don't need to write a book. )) When I replaced the bricks with open backed steps my dogs all freaked - *they* weren't going to go up or down *those* things! That lasted about a week before they became comfortable that they weren't going to fall through the risers.

My first reaction to your crisis would be that she might have hurt herself on the steps and is nervous but that injury should have shown up at the vets.

At 1 1/2 years, I'm actually surprised that she lets him carry her without resisting. I know that my dogs want to have their feet on the floor / ground and while they will let me lift them, they aren't impressed.

Since there are two of you, I think I'd be inclined to leave her with one and have the other call her, maybe with a treat, from the top of the steps and see if you can determine what her problem is.

My boy wouldn't go downstairs...an unfortunate revelation that occurred the morning after we stayed in a second story hotel room. He also wouldn't do elevators. I spent some time with him, carrying treats, walking briskly through the halls, heeling, sitting, stop and go, into elevators, out, up a fewer steps down all fast with rapid changes which forced him to focus on me so it sorry ofc tricked him into going down the stairs without realizing it.

Good luck.

I'm glad to learn of other Huskies who don't like to be picked up, Al. Grant finds it humiliating and it was enough of a deterrent that he learned to walk down the slotted stairs at a hotel when he was 6 months old. I use praise and treats for everything else.

Lisa, maybe Arya doesn't want the outdoor fun to end by going upstairs to the apartment--?

I'm not sure what it is. Just started, never had a problem before. I just can't lift her and I won't drag her into the house. I have tried treats, peanut butter, cheese. she just sits at the bottom of the stairs.
She does come into the foyer (up five stairs). Then she is dead weight. We will work on it. One step at a time.

You might try getting a run at it. Use a high voice with a lot of 'come on' , 'you can do it' , 'go go go'. and just try to get her energy way up and take a run at it. That's how I get mine through the open grate style stairs at some of the parks that they absolutely hate.

I wish my male was apposed to being carried. 73 pounds of fuzz has no qualms with it. I've packed him more than I care to admit.

I've never had a dog that liked to be carried, including Misty. At best, they tolerated it, but they always looked uncomfortable or embarrassed.

We had a bit of an issue with Misty and our utility room about a month ago. To get from the garage to the kitchen in our house (or into the house in general), you have to go through the utility room (furnace, hot water heater, washer and dryer), and Misty suddenly decided she flat-out didn't like the utility room. She dug in her heels and refused to budge.  I know you don't want to pull your dog up the stairs, but I did just that with Misty -- I pulled her through the utility room to the kitchen.  After a couple of times of being pulled through the utility room, Misty just gave up and went through on her own without complaint.  Now she doesn't even flinch while going through the utility room -- I'm guessing she learned that whatever was spooking her was nothing to fear after all.  That whole incident lasted maybe one entire weekend, and no problems since.

Our boy, now a little over 5 months has the same problem. The stone stairs going up into our house have a gap so you can see through each step. That combined with the stone being a bit slippery on his paws he ABSOLUTELY will not go up them. He is totally fine going down them (I'm guessing because he cant see through them). I have been working with him and when we go out for our walks I tend to pause him on the stairs and go real slow so he gets used to them; sometimes even turning around on them. Once I see his anxiety start to build I tend to finish walking down them (9 stars in total).

I have discovered that our boy is slightly afraid of heights. While hiking we have crossed foot bridges and if he can see through it his legs and paws spread wide, his butt drops and there is no way of moving him. I remain patient and calm and have been making slow progress. Please let me know if you discover a technique that works.

As for being carried, we try to pick him up often. Usually a quick scoop and hes good, he just gives up and takes it.

Hah! The husky pancake lol! Ami does that when we try to take him on the catwalk to our boat. He's fine on the dock but the catwalk is only 18-24" wide, the piling wiggles a bit and the whole thing is about 6 feet above the water. No sailing for that boy Rolling Eyes

I replied the other day, but it apparently didn't save, so even though this is a few days late, I thought I'd add to it.

If she's been using the stairs fine, and then suddenly won't do it, I would suspect 1 of 3 things.

1. Injury/medical event.
My brother had a lab that had seizure issues. After a couple years you could find every spot she ever had a seizure in by watching the way she walked around the house. Her doggy brain was connecting the various locations she had the seizure in to the medical event, so she carefully navigated the house in a serpentine pattern avoiding every spot she ever had an event.
If your dog suffered an injury going up or down those stairs one day, she may associate the stairs to that issue.

2. Health condition.
Things like arthritis can start affecting a dog long before it can be diagnosed by doctors. If the stairs are causing pain or discomfort, she's want to avoid them to avoid the pain/discomfort.

3. SDS - Stubborn dog syndrome
Huskies tend to be very susceptible to becoming inflicted with SDS. Time to go inside? Dog collapses. Time to go in the kennel? Dog collapses. Time to leave the dog park? Dog collapses. Huskies seem to have selective quadriplegia.

The easiest way to tell is to test a few other sets of stairs. See if she'll go up other sets of stairs. See is she'll go up other stairs in the apartment building (or neighboring building that is set up the same way). Try to see if it's that particular set of stairs, or stairs in general.
If she goes up other stairs fine, then it's likely not a ongoing health issue. Do you have another set of stairs you can take to get to your apartment. Use it for awhile and see if she stops using those stairs too.

Yes, my boy has SDS, haha. That was why I asked if she may not want the fun to end. We are focused on recall right now in training at age 2: Grant isn't allowed in the front gardens, but when the sprinkler is going, I let him into the house through the gardens, and he rebels with a few zoomies before going inside. This is an improvement over hauling a resisting dog inside by the leash. But as a younger pup, he would dig in and freeze if he didn't want to do something, such as walk after sunset, get in the car after a run. etc. I hope it isn't medical. SDS can be treated, although I'm not sure there's a cure. Smile
