PostSubject: Husky ran into the Woods.. Spokane WA   Husky ran into the Woods.. Spokane WA EmptyMon Jan 22, 2018 8:49 pm

Hello friends.. I'm new here..

I have an issue and desperately need help from a husky owners...

I had huskies for long time but i guess not long enough to know all things.. we took our husky for a hike into a park (over 100ac forest connected to more forest) and sure enough, every husky owners nightmare... My husky jerked back really hard and pulled off the collar and bolted straight into the woods.. this happened on the 9th of the January 2017.  Today its been 13 days..

any idea what would a husky do.. run back into the city? stay in the woods? chance deer? can husky be chased and eaten by coyotes?   any idea for personal experience..

thank you in advance..

Yes, i did post on every local lost & found FB page, i placed the ad on craigslist, as well as called the pounds daily (still do).. she is sweet and kind dog..

So sorry about your pup Sad I'd be devastated. We had a similar situation here in my neighborhood, only instead of woods, it's a canyon. A lady's dog was at the dog park playing fetch, saw a bunny, and took off. It was missing 3 days, it would have been longer with possibly worse results but the neighborhood formed a search team because one neighbor could swear she heard barking coming from the canyon. Turns out the woman's pup had fallen in a ravine and couldn't get back out.with the help of neighbors, the dog was saved. It shocked me it survived down there because the canyon has lots of coyotes, a bobcat, etc.

As for coyotes. Coyotes have been known to trick dogs into thinking they wanna play, only to lead them into a ambush of other coyotes, so while a dog may survive one coyote, not sure it could survive a pack. Your husky has been gone a long time, it doesn't mean it's hopeless. What you may want to do is visit homes on the outskirts of these woods to see if maybe someone saw her/took her in.

You can add my prayers in with yours, I really do hope for the best outcome. She is so pretty.

Something similar happened with another member here, her husky had showed up at someone's house and was trying to eat her cats food or something like that. I don't remember all the details that well, so I hope she posts and can also give you some advice.

Thank you, yes, that is my boy, Kohdi, and my girl, Mishka in my avatar. Smile

Take clothes that you have worn and leave them with high interest food close to where you lost the dog.
Check the spot over several days to see if the food is eaten.
Then wait and watch at the site.

My first husky bolted after a deer five miles into a run in a park.
I waited; he didn't come back.
I ran back to the car- he wasn't there.
I asked people coming out of the park if they had seen him.
They said, "Yes," at the spot where I had lost him.
I ran back and called.
He cam trotting out of the woods like nothing was wrong.
This was at least three hours after I had lost him.

Coyotes should not be a terrible threat to an adult husky 45 pounds of more, particularly western coyote which is smaller than eastern coyote which is generally regarded as a hybrid coyote, wolf domestic dog.  Even with the eastern coyote, a full size husky over 45 pound should be ok.  DEC sites and other coyote information sites, for the most part, discount as urban legend stories of coyote meeting dogs.  If your dog has a high prey drive, he likely will be able to survive in a forest.  With my first girl, 40 years ago, we had a similar fright.  But she had visited a family and they were keeping her contained while they looked for her owners...it was my flyers that did the trick.

PostSubject: Re: Husky ran into the Woods.. Spokane WA   Husky ran into the Woods.. Spokane WA EmptyTue Jan 23, 2018 11:31 am

I have a little experience with coyotes and coy-wolves -- Yeah, they really aren't much of a threat.  Most of them avoid dogs and any other creature that smells remotely human.  Most of them are just glorified trash-pandas.  Bears are much more dangerous, but a Husky can easily outrun a bear.

I'm really sorry about your dog.  I hope you do find her, and soon.  I can't help but be reminded of Misty.  Misty was found lost and starved in a state park/forest (in Indiana) and taken to a local shelter.  Her owners never turned up, so she was adopted out (to us).  I keep expecting a phone call from someone going, "You have my dog!"

I keep wondering if, given the sheer athleticism and endurance of the average Husky, Misty originated from somewhere other than southern Indiana, and maybe her owners never found her because they weren't looking far enough away.  It isn't far-fetched to think Misty could have run to Indiana from Illinois.  The Illinois border isn't THAT far from where she was found.

Have you also checked with local veterinarians? Sometimes people post missing dogs with veterinarians, too. OR, if someone found your Husky and decided to keep her, a veterinarian might also help to track her down.

PostSubject: Re: Husky ran into the Woods.. Spokane WA   Husky ran into the Woods.. Spokane WA EmptyTue Jan 23, 2018 11:56 am

The only time I have ever had coyotes attack a dog was when we were in a deep drought and the small game population had been hurt severely. This time of year and considering where you are I wouldn't be concerned with coyotes.

Huskies are very resourceful dogs. My latest addition was on the run for several weeks before someone caught him and took him to the pound. He was doing just fine picking up road kill for food. Make note of houses in the area that have cats or chickens. My boy was the one mentioned above that got loose a while back and we ran around to all the houses who had cats and chickens because I figured he would eventually come in to eat either the cats and chickens or their food if he couldn't find enough small prey or road kill to sustain himself. After a couple days he did make his way up to a house not far from us after the cats and we were able to pick him up. Without tags you will need to keep your feet on the ground more. There are many older folks who won't check online if a dog comes up to their house. In fact my boy was gone as long as he was because the older woman at the house where he showed up was scared to go near him and was hoping that he would leave on his own. While he did have tags and she was able to call us directly mine also are chipped so that if they go into a shelter or vet they can be returned that way as well.

Kon, I'm really sorry that she went missing ... I didn't know enough about Huskies when I got my first and lost her through my own ignorance so I know the feelings you're going through.

If you had her chipped, have you checked with the registering company ... some of them will notify you if your dog is found whether you're current on fees or not - others won't unless you've kept the registration fees current. It's always a good place to call since they will put out their own notices. (( Tell me she is chipped, please!! ))

BTW, that is why a lot of people here have the tags on one collar and another collar they put on when they walk the dog ... if they pull out of the walking collar, they still have their identifying tags.

If you send me a PM with your contact info, I'll post on H2M2 here in Portland.
There's an outside chance if somebody's got her and trying to sell her, it won't be in Spokane.
I have been checking Craigslist.

After reading many heart wrenching stories of "Husky's gone Wild" and knowing how stubborn, and disrespectful my baby already is when she doesn't feel like listening to me, I have decided on picking up a GPS tracking device like - Whistle 3 GPS Pet Tracker & Activity Monitor and attaching it to her collar.

Every one of my dogs has slipped out of their collar at some point, and although they were ecstatic about their sudden new found freedom, they never ran off like yours has.

Very sorry and hope you find her soon.

Rocky, I've looked at those trackers and reached the opinion that they might be useful in a city but not in the country.

Most of the ones I've seen depend on the presence of cell towers to talk back to you - not good if you're in mountainous terrain where you can't get a cell signal. The others use direct tracking and they're good for flat land up to about a mile range.

I've let Avalanche run a time or two since he will dependably come to the Jeep and he's often 5+ miles down the road before I catch up with him.

Neither of those would work for me - but then my situations is just a little different than most. As the saying goes, YMMV

For back-country, about the only thing that I know of that might work would be akin to a personal GPS tracking device like folks use for long distance backpacking; they only need to be able to see the sky to lock on, and activate based on a motion sensor to turn itself on and off.
Down side to something like that is size, and inability to provide continuous tracking.

No really good solution for your situation, save a double lanyard system; one to the harness, and one to the collar.

Kon, if you see something that looks interesting - read "workable" - give me a yell, would you please.

You can see my thought and comments from an earlier post here.

You can do this simple fix to connect collar and leash.
https://www.itsahuskything.com/t3638-prong-collar-popping-open?highlight=escape+proof+collar
Or just use a harness that the can't back out of, IE. with a belly band.
