Husky and Exercice Empty
PostSubject: Husky and Exercice   Husky and Exercice EmptyMon Apr 09, 2018 2:43 pm

Hi!
I'm maybe getting a husky but I need to be sure if husky is suitable for me. So if you own husky could you tell me how much exercise husky needs? This maybe sounds weird but I'd like to exercise as much as husky needs so I know if I'm able to take husky. So how much does your husky pull? Everyday? How much? How much your huskies can run unleashed? Thank you for answers ! ????

And sorry I don't write English very well..

Husky and Exercice Empty
PostSubject: Re: Husky and Exercice   Husky and Exercice EmptyMon Apr 09, 2018 5:59 pm

Mine get around 3-5 miles (5km or more) a day. A lot depends on the dog. Some people can get away with a couple miles a day. For short days I have a backpack my dogs can carry. 10% of body weight used to be the max weight to carry for a dog I think. So mine carry around 5 pounds. If you are going to have your dog carry weight you must work up to it. Never throw 10% of a dog's body weight on a dog and take off. Always start with an empty pack and then add tiny amounts of weight over time. Mine don't get off leash time outside of a fenced in area. I have a fenced in yard that is larger than most dog parks and they are out there a few hours a day, but most of the time they are just laying on the back porch watching the world around them more than actually doing something. Mental exercise through training is important too. When the weather is bad this goes a long way to keeping them and you sane. A happy husky is a tired husky. A tired husky will not destroy everything you own.

Husky and Exercice Empty
PostSubject: Re: Husky and Exercice   Husky and Exercice EmptyMon Apr 09, 2018 6:22 pm

to add to what Jenn said it is also dependent on the dogs age, pups under 2yr should not be carrying much weight as the bones are still fusing. pups under 1 get short bursts or work outs till they grow older.
Mine get about 2 miles a day, i take them out twice for about 25-45 min. it all depends on how much they sniff, use the bathroom or meet a dog on the walk. they do pull, it takes much work to get good leash manners, the sooner the lessons the better. the weekends we do hikes and dog park trips or meet ups with friends with dogs.
thank you for looking into how much work they need before you get in over your head.
huskies are a lot of work at all ages

Husky and Exercice Empty
PostSubject: Re: Husky and Exercice   Husky and Exercice EmptyTue Apr 10, 2018 1:10 am

Hey Eviev!

My husky is 1.5 years old now, and we live in a small loft in a bustling city. We don't have the luxury of a yard, but do have the bonus of having 5 different dog parks within a 2km radius of where I live. We're usually out 3 times a day, 2-2.5 hours in the morning at an off leash dog park, quick 15 minute pee break around dinner time, and out for another 1.5 hours at a different off leash dog park at night.

I probably overdo it with Echo, but there's not exactly a lot of space to play in our house, so all he really does at home is sleep. Doesn't play, doesn't bother me, doesn't chew anything just sleeps and bides his energy for our next crazy dog adventure!

Good luck with your decision!

Husky and Exercice Empty
PostSubject: Re: Husky and Exercice   Husky and Exercice EmptyTue Apr 10, 2018 11:33 am

My Husky is almost 2. I've never seen him tired...ever...seriously. Not even in 100 degree weather with 80% humidity. We've had other high energy/high endurance working dogs before, but we weren't prepared for how much more demanding huskies are.

He gets a couple miles of off-leash running every morning. He gets one or two half mile walks on-leash per day. He gets play time in the yard every day. He has a rather large enclosure, so he moves around a bit during the day and plays with toys. He spends the afternoon at a doggy day care twice a week. During the spring and fall he gets an hour long walk on-leash several times a week. During the summer he gets an extra on-leash mile long jog. On weekends he gets at least one 10 mile run off-leash.

We have video of him having the zoomies immediately after the 10 mile run. We're talking 10 miles for the human. He's running back and forth, ahead and behind, chasing field mice, etc...so he's probably putting in 20 miles.

I'm planning to start working on him with some joring activities starting this spring in order to help burn off some energy. We also plan on getting a doggie back pack for him for the longer runs so he can carry his own water.

If we skimp on any activities, he becomes an uncontrollable mess. He will tear up toys, bark and whine, start fights with his older doggie companion, rip up blankets, chew on 2x4s, dig holes, etc. He's not being a jerk, he just is looking to burn off some energy.

Huskies are NOT lap dogs that will lounge around a house all day and only step outside to go to the bathroom. They tend to have a VERY high energy level and require a considerable amount of exercise to keep their behavior in line.
Also, off-leash time with huskies is rare, and takes a considerable amount of work. We never do it in town. There are too many distractions, and too many ways for crazy out of control dog to get hurt. We do let him go off-leash in specific areas that are fairly contained and safe. Beyond that we've done considerable amounts of recall training and use an e-collar to reinforce that training. Off-leash training (other than in a dog park) is a difficult and some times impossible task for huskies.

If this is your first dog, I would strongly recommend that you do NOT get a husky. Start with something a little more mellow. If you can't spend at least 2 hours a day exercising your dog, a husky will be a risky endeavor.

Husky and Exercice Empty
PostSubject: Re: Husky and Exercice   Husky and Exercice EmptyTue Apr 10, 2018 2:35 pm

We got Ami as a 1 yr old. Initially, he was either tethered on a 100' over head trolley or crated until we put invisible fence around 4 acres. He was walked 2 ish miles on the morning. Another 3 late afternoon and a short mile before bed. He does not get anywhere near that now...i was sick most of the winter and am building up my own stamina.
When he needs running, my son brings his husky mix over...they play hard and rough and that takes care of a few days. Our 8 year old rescue does not need that much though he would be very happy if I could do that now. You might find an older rescue, say 4-5 years old, with a less active temperament. Even over 2, I'll bet you could find a rescue more low energy...not all, but some.

Husky and Exercice Empty
PostSubject: Re: Husky and Exercice   Husky and Exercice EmptyFri Apr 13, 2018 11:16 am

Mine is a middle-aged husky-shepherd mix. But he gets one hourlong walk/run on trails in the morning, and one 45 min walk around neighborhood in the evening. At lunch, we play/train in yard a bit. On Wednesdays, for a break in the boring workweek, he goes to doggy day care where he plays with other dogs.

He's been trained not to pull on leash and most of the time the leash is hanging in a curve between us. Although my husband loves it when he pulls him uphill at a gallop...:-)

My dog can not be trusted offleash unless in a fenced area. He gets very excited by deer, rabbits, stray cats - his brain goes into "hunt" mode & he doesn't even hear me when he sees them nearby. I don't want to find out what happens if he takes off on a big chase - he could get hit by a car, or get lost!
