She's really rough. When Sully was around, she came in with blood spots on her face once and I freaked out! I cleaned her up and didn't see she was bleeding anywhere so I figured it came from Sully and Ginger was playing so rough that she bit down a little too hard. I checked Sully, but he's black and white so it was hard to tell if he was bleeding anywhere.

Claudia, give storm some time to settle in and he will play back! Its good to see G wanting to play. Have u looked on here or youtube for huskies playing? They really do look rough but its just howw they are. Wish I had my phone last night as S&( were going at it. There were some "low" and dirty leg grabs going on with both of them!

I'm slowly getting used her rough play. She will sometimes show teeth, and I just don't want that to escalate, so I'm overly cautious, I guess.

This is one of those times where I would step back and let the dogs handle it themselves. In reality, you have no idea how comfortable Storm is with rough play and you need to let him make his own decision on when it's okay to stop and when it's okay to keep going. He will let Ginger know.

They WILL get into a fight or two. It's only natural. THAT'S when I step in, but until then, I let them scream, growl, bare teeth, snarl... do whatever they want to each other because I feel that it's important to let them establish their own boundaries without my anxiety and fear entering into the equation.

Just my $.02

Thanks Tori!

I don't mind all of the above - I just don't want to see blood on either of them Sad And I certainly don't want either of them to get too injured because it escalated.

But...you're right, they will have to figure it out themselves to establish their own boundaries.

Ginger has already told Storm, 'You're too big to mount me!' LOL! He hasn't tried again....but....he's still new around here, and I'm sure there are still lots to learn about the dynamics that will develop over the next few months between the two.

Honestly? Blood may happen... ours certainly had quite a few knicks on the ears... but it's to be expected.

What's important is that you let them work it out for themselves... if they DO start to fight for real, just make sure you're breaking it up safely. Keep a can of pennies lying around and throw it down next to them to distract them, then pull them apart. Just be safe.

Rescues and integrating a new dog is very rarely a seemless and flawless process. Trust me... my two LOVE each other. They are attached at the hip!! But they most certainly had to adjust and fight to get that way. There is a language between them that John and I could never begin to understand. So let them do it their own way and only interfere if a fight starts.

It's tough love for sure, and one of them might get scratched or cut.... but they'll be fine. Put it this way.... yours are already integrated LIGHTYEARS beyond Koda and Hailey at that stage. A week into getting Hailey, Koda still wasn't allowed near her without her snarling at him. You're doing great. Smile

It's better than escalating the fight with yelling. Once in a while the dogs will listen to a HUGE bellow by John, but not from me by any means. We needed something that I could use when John wasn't home since I was home alone with the dogs all day. A can of pennies is a loud enough and strange enough noise that it jolts them to a stop. Trick is NEVER use it unless in a fight or emergency. You don't want them to EVER get used to that sound. You need something that will jerk BOTH of them out of their angry stupor before you can safely step in and get involved.

ETA: For the record, we really don't have a need for it anymore. Ours *knock on wood* don't fight like that anymore. I'll walk in on them snarling at each other about one thing or another, but they don't escalate it to a fight anymore. They know how to communicate with one another now.

Wow i guess we have just been very lucky, our 2 have never truly fought. the only scare we ever had was when Maui was with us and her and Sierra were not friendly. and of course the issues at the dog park....

Oh I'm so in love with those two! Love the videos, Claudia! Storm makes Ginger look like a dwarf husky. Laughing Ginger looks so much more active with Storm than she did with Sully. I agree 100% with Tori on letting them handle things themselves and only stepping in when absolutely necessary. The coins in a can is excellent, someone used to bring them to the husky meet ups we used to attend and would use it to break up husky fights that would break out at the dog park. Works very well!

I'm just can't believe how big he is! And I really thing he's taller than Sully! And yes, Ginger looks petite next to Storm! The difference between Sully and Storm, was Sully was the one who instigated play! It was hard for Sully especially on the hardwood floor with his bum leg, but after the first couple of days with Sully, the last block on our way home, Sully would want to play with Ginger all the way home! Storm is there....yet. His foster mom said he used to play lots with her 2 huskies...
