PostSubject: 8weeks old Puppy - weight and introduction into home   Puppy - 8weeks old Puppy - weight and introduction into home EmptyThu Dec 13, 2018 12:46 pm

Hi guys, we just bought a 8weeks old husky puppy and currently we have a labrador retriever (8years old) and a miniature daschund (5years old) at home. All male dogs.

Just weighed the puppy and he is about 5pounds. Did a Google search and found that he is grossly underweight. Seems like for his age, he should be around 8 to 10pounds? Is that normal or we should be concerned?

In 2 weeks time, we will need to bring him for his 2nd time shots.

We didnt really follow any procedure for introducing him into our home with our existing 2 dogs (labrador retriever and a miniature dachshund). We just took him in and let the 2 dogs sniff him.

So far, the labrador doesnt seems to carry much. He allows the puppy to share his food and water. The labrador only seems wary and growl very very little and soft when the puppy is very near when he is resting on the floor.

As for the miniature daschund, he is like the alpha of the family. Even my large size labrador is scared of him. He growls and jumps to snarl whenever the labrador is close to his food bowl. However he doesnt mind to share his water bowl.

Well with the puppy, the dachshund growls at him for drinking his water bowl and eating his food. Even growls at him for drinking a new water bowl far away from his space lol. But, they do play around - the puppy chases him round and round, and the daschund putting his paw on the puppy back when the puppy is sleeping.

I guess I should just let time take its course for my dogs to get to know and be familiar with the puppy?

Thanks for listening.

5lbs seems light to me but I only have our dogs as a reference. Maybe he was the runt of the litter? Could he be a miniature, mix breed?

If he is otherwise acting normally- eating, normal poops etc- I'd let things go for a while and see what happens. Feed according to the directions on whatever food you're using.

Also be sure to worm him if you haven't already.

Likely a mix of something small. The one picture almost makes it look like he might have some bluing to his coat pattern which would indicate a mix. Ears don't look to be even attempting to stand which can be a mix or could be indicative of a puppy far younger than said to be. Can't tell for sure from pictures but looks like a mix just from what you showed.

Adding my two cents worth in here, what I see there is a puppy who's about 6-7 weeks old at the most. His ears aren't standing, snout isn't developed --- he's either, as everyone else has said, a mix or much younger than you've been told.

Thanks everyone for your insights and advice.

When my husband went to collect the puppy from the seller's house,

- the male puppy and his sister were the only ones remaining. All other puppies were sold beforehand.

- He saw and asked the owners that the mother and father Huskies were purebred husky but not AKC registered.

- his sister (the other puppy) was like twice his size. So I would probably guess that he is the runt of the litter and that's why nobody had bought him.

- he has been dewormed (cant be sure since this is said by the sellers) but will check with vet on this again

We are feeding him well hoping to increase his weight. Since when you hold him, you can feel his bones. So far. He is eating well and playing well. Just that he is having wet stool, probably from the stress in new environment.

Hopefully he is purebred, if not, we will still love him unconditionally:)
