I would probably give her a firm, NO!. Maybe even grab the back of her neck (scruff) and look directly into her eyes while I did it. Have to get a handle on it now, but she is a puppy so it may take a bit for her to learn what's appropriate.

We dropped a small chicken leg on the ground when the puppies were small. I had planned on crushing it first before giving it to Max. He beat me too it. I was worried he was going to choke. He was not going to let it go so I prepared for getting bit while I opened his jaws to take it out.

If I got bit, I knew it was my fault, so I did not get mad at him.

Thats about what i did. Just startled me. Up till now never did anything close to it. Im not sure dogs can feel bad for doing something but right after she was very cuddly so i accepted her "apology" looks like its time to teach her the leave it command. Shes about potty trained and will sit and shake.

I personally wouldn't do the scruff grabbing bit, but I would do a firm 'No' if she does it again.

Definitely start training 'leave it' and 'drop it.' If she's food possessive, work on that as well. Feed her kibble from your hand and teach her to trade toys for treats or things of higher value.

She's very young so this is the perfect time to start working on this.

Thank you, shes back to her lovable self now. was just something about that piece of pepper i guess. i have went up to her before and petted her while she ate, fed her from my hand, took crap out of her mouth before and since and not a problem so who knows.

I plan on training the stay, leave it and drop it now. she should be ok with drop it, she already will come to me when she has something and drop it at my feet such as toys and sometimes cardboard and the like

It's a value thing.... the pepper happened to be high value- at that time. She valued the pepper more than letting you have it. Smile

The value concept is important for future training. Once you introduce distractions into your training, the reward value may need to go up. e.g. training recall with lots of distractions may take a piece of hot dog, chicken (or pepper Very Happy ) to get her to come to you... assuming you choose to use food as a reward v.s toys or praise.

Teaching leave it, drop it etc are all very good. I like Leave It the best because that's the one I can see using the most out on walks, trails etc.
