Poor Z'ev is Not Feeling so Good. Empty
PostSubject: Poor Z'ev is Not Feeling so Good.    Poor Z'ev is Not Feeling so Good. EmptyTue Aug 27, 2019 11:26 pm

We're on overnight wait and see when we go to b the very at 8 AM. This morning, on our walk Z'ev had a firm poop with red blood streaks and a clot on the outside. Wayne said that is not emergency, could be straining, hemorrhoid, irritation in the lower bowel/rectum. He was in his crate most of today while we were gone. On return, he drank tons of water, not necessarily unusual but refused his dinner. This boy ALWAYS eats too hon outside, he had diarrhea, no blood. He's lethargic, not eating, wants to drink a lot but is vomiting it up. Wayne listened to heart and bowel. Heart rate not unusual at 105. At first no bowel sounds, then after drinking more, and throwing up, did hear a board sound but abdomen is soft and apparently non-tender.

So I get ordered to call the vet and make an appt for the morning, "if he's still alive!😲". Right. Thanks for the encouragement, hubby. Vet called me back, said no food or drink overnight, she doesn't want him to vomit again.

He does not appear to be in pain. Wayne is worried about possible obstruction but nothing apparent on that front yet.

Aside from the worry, and probably sleepless night, Z'ev prefers to vomit in the house, not outside.

I'm also concerned it's a stress response. This is the 3rd day in a row we've left without the dogs for at least 6 hours. Z'ev has separation anxiety and salivates all over while we're gone, which usually is no more than once a week where were both gone.

And then there's the small piece of the chicken wing he got at grandson's birthday party 2 weeks ago... The wing section with the 2 very thin, tiny bones. He got maybe half of one section, I got the other half with the cartilage...

Fingers crossed he's better in the morning.

Oh no, Amy, I hope he will be ok! Please keep us updated! The lethargy is the most worrisome to me. Kohdi recently had blood in the stool but vet figured it out, it was a cut he had gotten somehow. Kohdi didn’t have any other of Zev’s symptoms though so I know it’s much more serious than a cut or something. Ugh, I’m so sorry to hear this, Amy. Positive thoughts and energy for you all, Amy.

Thanks Jimmy. Given that Z'ev is now 10 years old, my worry quotient is up there.

Phew. Back to his old self this morning. Vet found no blood on rectal exam but thought there was some inflammation. She's going with stress induced colitis (we've been away each day 3 days running, normally we're gone at best once a week or so, he does have some separation anxiety). She also thinks the vomiting was from aggressively drinking too much, to fast. That I agree! So a few days of boiled rice and chicken, multiple small meals, with a daily dose of probiotics and see how it goes.

It does occur to me that the last bag of Victor hi pro plus had a formula change but that was about 3-4 weeks ago and and I did mix old and new for a day or two. Looked to be same ingredients, just slightly different order on the label so I want too concerned. Essentially it up the animal protein to 88% versus 81 (or so) on the old.

We shall see.

I've heard of a few people who have had some mild issues with the formula change at Victor's. Doesn't seem like anything that their dogs wouldn't get used to if they would give them a chance to do so. Probably a combination of things. I had a similar issue with colitis and kenzi several years ago when she was going through heat at the same time we were in training mode and did a food change. She was over it in a couple weeks after a week of bland food. Hopefully that is all it is for Z'ev and it will pass quickly. Kenzi and Z'ev are around the same age. 10-11. And boy, kenzi has sure been showing her age lately.

@amymeme  I'm sure glad he's feeling better because I know the feeling of having a dog we'd have gladly "given back" but has now been around long enough that they're a part of the pack.  You and Z'ev, me and Sasha.  And Sasha's getting up there in years as well, I don't know how old she really is but my PitaPata says that she's been with me for more than a few years.  A royal pain in the tuchas - but like Z'ev - she's my pain!

Ugh. Z'ev is supposed to have 3-4 meals of only 3-4 tablespoons of chicken and rice. Did is famished and wants to eat everything in sight!

Back to his old self. Eating only his kibble now on normal schedule with added probiotics the vet gave us. He was playing with Ami last night, back to being slightly persnickety at doors and water bowls, following me everywhere, leaping up as soon as I put shoes on our go to a door.

Whew. Thanks for asking.
