| Hi everyone!
I am the new mom to a gorgeous 3.5 month old Huksy, Frankie. Vet said he's totally healthy, except for coccidia.
I know a lot of puppies get this, but i was curious to see if any one here has had to deal with it and what worked best for your husky?
We were also told to feed him a "bland" diet...any suggestions?
Thanks a million! Frankie's Mom |

| Mickey had coccidia & giardia really bad for the first few months when we got him from animal control. We were given antibiotics and I think some liquid stuff for him that took care of it. I don't believe we changed his food (because of the diagnosis) but back then he was eating Purina so it was chock full of fillers anyway.
Took a while to finally get it totally under control. _________________ Cheyenne, Mishka, Mickey, Rodeo, & Odin Are you a Husky owner in South Florida?! Join our facebook meetup group! Visit our Photostream on Flickr! |

| Kale had Roundworms and Coccida. He was prescribed Albon. No change of diet is required usually hmm. He was on the medication for 3 weeks for the coccida and 2 doses of Sentinel (one each month) for the roundworms, and a follow up of Panacur 3 weeks after that. 1 packet in a meal for 3 days. The Albon prevents the eggs from becoming the parasite, the adults eventually die off, and with there no eggs hatching, the parasite is gone. That's why he stayed on the medication for 3 weeks. changing the diet won't do much at all. You have to prevent the eggs from become the parasite to get rid of this particular parasite. |

| Hmm...vet told us to feed him rice and boiled chicken. They gave us 2 4 ML doses of a dewormer , once for 2 days. Yesterday he was very loose and wouldn't eat the rice. This morning, he ate all his breakfast (rice, chicken, chicken broth) and when he went out it was semi-formed (yay!).
He's done with his medicine now, so we just had to sit and wait and see how he feels over the next few days.
Thank you so much for responding though! It makes me feel so much better.

| yikes. 2 days is not enough time to get rid of Coccidia. Coccidia are protozoans, not worms, so a dewormer would not work. http://www.dailypuppy.com/articles/what-are-the-treatments-for-coccidia-in-dogs/3c8d9ce9-f09d-d3da-9d62-c7b08edbb0d9 http://www.swiftwaterfarms.com/swiftwater/p21Coccidia.htm I'd ask your Vet why they prescribed a dewormer for Coccidia. I've never heard of that before and I've been working in vet clinics for 4 years. I'm interested in hearing what medication your using, because if it is effective for protozoal infections, i'd like to research it. |

| I'm not really sure of the name of it - I looked at the bag the 2 syringes came in and it said it was a dewormer. I spoke with family members who have rasied puppies of all different breeds and some of them have done the same thing. Administered 2 doses through an oral syringe over 2 days.
I called our vet to make sure everything was as it was supposed to be, and he said that the medicine basically gives Frankie diarrhea to remove the parasite - which explains the disasters he was producing yesterday. This morning however, his stool was definately more formed than the past 2 days. I'm hoping the rice and chicken had something to do with that. |

| Weird. Yeah, I foster kittens and they sometimes have coccidia and I give them their meds for a while, not just two days. But for your original question, I never change the kitten's diet and they seem to get over it fine. |

| I'm with Brooke, sounds a little like they didn't get treated as most cases I've seen of coccidia. I've never seen a dog with it not take Albon either. |

| They gave us Marguis Dewormer. I'm wondering since we caught it so early if that's why they gave that to us instead of Albon. |

OMG! Marguis Dewormer?! Thats for HORSES! You need to see a different vet. That's for a 1,000Ib animal... not a puppy. It can be used on large dogs in VERY small amounts (150+) but not medium to small dogs, that's dangerous. Incredible. That was prescribed a lot at the large/small animal hospital that I worked at but it was ONLY used on horses. I wonder why on earth he didn't just prescribe Albon or Tribrissen. |

| Why do we not have a jaw drop emoticon? Once again, with Brooke. I'd strongly advise to go to a new vet and tell them what this vet prescribed you and their method of treatment and get a 2nd opinion and bring up what you learned on here. This is not proper treatment at all and I would hate for something to happen to your little pup because of a vet who is obviously confused. |

| I just got back from the vet a couple hours ago. My vet gave my puppy some medicine for Coccidia. She also had Hypoglycemia since she has been vomiting and diarhea. I gave her medicine and since leaving the vet my puppy has pooped about 7 times and has diarhea bad. She ate a little and drank some but her stomach is so messed up she doesn’t want to eat anymore. I have been giving her nutria cal to try and keep her blood sugar up but I am worried she can’t keep enough in her system to raise her blood sugar. I have forced her to drink water using a syringe but she absolutely refuses food because as soon as she eats she runs and poops it out which I am sure her bum is sore now since she is rubbing it on the carpet. She is sleeping and just wants to sleep. She is shivering when she sleeps and it’s not really cold. Should I just leave her be? Let her sleep? I am just so afraid she doesn’t have enough food in her body to help her immune system fight off the coccidia. Please someone help. |

| If she is having diarrhea, fasting her for at least 24 hours is totally ok, as long as she still has fluids. The meds don't need food to work. I always use an electrolyte solution like Pedialyte as well. There's cheaper versions of it (learned that here! WOO! i'm all for saving money!) when you start to feed her food again, try adding a little pumpkin or plain low fat yogurt yo her food. Only give her a little bit of food at a time. Maybe try mixing the nutri-cal in with some water, and syringe feed her that, that way its not so dense and upsetting to the stomach. I'd also wrap her up in a blanket and hold her and keep her warm with your body heat. If she's not better within 24 hours or if she is starting to have labored breathing, take her to the vet immediately. That could be a much more serious condition. |

| Okay, figure I should just add to this thread since this topic is already started. Drogo and Navi both have coccidia. Bad. Explosive diaherra every morning without fail for probably 4 days. Drogo has also had an accident in the house, twice actually and has made a mess of my carpet. I managed to get the stains out but I'm scared that area and the places they go potty outside might be reinfecting them. I'm sure having to sit side by side in their crates while they both go to the bathroom in them doesn't help either. I was given Ponazuril which I'm pretty sure is the same ingredient found in Marquis. Apparently Albon isn't always as effective as it once was hense the change in medication. They were both given a 2 day supply and yesterday was the last dose - I see no change at all. I was going to go back to the vet and ask for Albon but I read it wasn't safe to switch between those two medicines. Not sure how true that is. I know treatment for coccidia is much longer than 2 days but they said with this medicine it only requires a very short treatment. I just don't know what to do. I need to find a way to get this diaherra under control. Navi's crate was so bad this morning (3:30AM) that Dwayne had to go into work late so he could stay and help me. It was all over everything, including her. Needless to say, neither of them have beds anymore. |

| I'd call your vet and tell them that your pup is still having diarrhea, that you didn't get enough of the medication or that it didn't work and you want to start on a sulfa drug specifically for small animals. A puppy needs to be on a sulfa until the diarrhea stops plus a few days, to make sure the protozoans have stopped reproducing. This gives your pups natural immune system a fighting chance to kill off the still alive adults. In the meantime, make sure they have plenty on fluids, all thet extra water in the poop will make them dehydrate pretty fast. |
