My aggressive male husky is cuddling on the couch with me right now of his own volition (ie- I didn't call him up).

lol!

My aggressive Husky is curled up asleep with our gentle, persecuted, small Cocker Spaniel and at least one of our cats. Funny, it's the Cocker who keeps going ape and barking her head off at every little noise emanating from the TV.

BTW, I love how you had to do a math problem to validate that you weren't a computer in order to post a comment on that article. I'm surprised that some of them were able to master that and leave their ignorant little comments. Yes, I've hit the point in my evening where I've become rather snarky...

Is a little off-topic in away but sorta has to do with stopping a dog fight. I had to stop 2 of them just last week. And just need really some advice on how to get Josie over this situation if possible. Heres pretty much the story. Sorry if its a little long :/

My dog Josie when we first got her use to be fine with other dogs unless they showd aggression towards her or else she would be cool, calm, and would wana play. But this summer it went bad. A person that lives up the road from me they never really use to tie there two dogs (yellow lab and a husky) up and they would wonder around. Well so happens they came into our yard when we had both our dogs outside. The yellow lab went after my Chihiuahua as the husky went at Josie. But Josie seen the lab go after my other dog in time to go into protection mode and she jumpd the yellow lab. But as soon as she did that the husky jumpd her to and she was then getting double teamd by both dogs. My mom was there and able to break it up fine. Then about a week after that it happend again but this time both dogs went straght for Josie right away. She held her own good until my dad this time was there to break it up. This time tho she got a lil cut above her eye. Then next day after that as my mom took her for a walk a dog came out at them and attackd Josie and nipped her a bit. Ever sence then especially sence she got attackd by the 2 dogs at once she has been very aggresive towards any dog ever sence that will come up to her. But if the other dog wont aproch her at all just be in a short distace like 5 feet or so away and show to be calm. Josie wil acually be calm herself and not show any aggression at all and be in a playful mood. (Note) All dogs that aproch us is when we are walking her and all these dogs come out unleashed and no owners in site. I'm hoping theres a way to get her over being mean towards every dog. would like to be able to take her to the dog park and leave her unleashd and not have to worry so much about it. There are a few dogs shes really nice to but either there to small for her to play with or there to old.

Had one person tell me to try and find someone with a dog around her size and age and see if theyd help work with me and her to get friendly again. Or what is you peoples opinons?

Thanks.

IMO, she needs to be reconditioned to see dogs approaching as a positive experience rather than necessitate the fight/flight reaction. I'm sure you're also nervous too when new strange dogs approach- especially those off lead with no owner in sight.

There is an amazing book called "Control Unleashed" which has games that you play with the dog relating to various issues (normally surrounding dog reactive situations) I think the game that would help her most is the "there's a dog in your face!" game also many of the others would also assist. You can purchase it on Amazon... I really recommend it.

If you don't want to buy the book you can start with just rewarding her for looking at other dogs while you walk. This may be difficult because of the apparent amount of off-leash dogs in your neighborhood. I really would talk to these people and ask if something can be done. Either that or report them. I consider my dogs safety above all else. If they're not willing to take precautions then you are totally within your right to have those precautions taken by the authorities to impound those dogs when they're loose.

first thing is first CALL ANIMAL CONTROL on those loose dogs!
second is how did the dogs get into your yard? do you not have a fence? is Josie on a tie out? i would not leave her outside unless someone is watching her every second till those loose dogs are contained.
we have had to many encounters with demon dogs in our neighborhood, i do not trust ANY loose dog coming at us and see it as a threat. the first thing i do is pull sierra and jack together and pull in the leash and position myself between S&J and the on coming dog, im always ready to kick if i need to, i do yell as much as i can and look for anything i can chuck at the dog. i do not try and move from the spot we are in until i know the dog is gone. S&J do not trust any dog that comes up to them while we are walking with leashes on because i can't always get the dog to go and a few times they have gotten attacked. they will be on edge for a few weeks and it sucks but they know the drill now and get behind me and it has worked.
Josie will need time to feel safe and she needs to know you will do what ever to keep her safe when these things happen. you can start by taking her to a dog park on off times so its not to busy. dogs react differently when they are leashed than when they are in a park with free run. give her some time and keep her safe and she will come around.

Wait a minute! She's basing that comment on only seeing the bitee in her office. The description of the biter is from the small dog owner, most of whom are not familiar with larger breeds.

So her expertise is based on hearsay?

The one question I ask was when the lil crapper was brought for repairs did the owners ever admit that it was their demon that started the fracas.

On and on and on from some of the other dunderheads weeeeelllll if Dr. Lee says it true it must be because she is a vet. Well I hope she is a better vet then blogger.
Patty K. went over to Vetstreet blog I really enjoyed her articles even if I wasn't always in agreement at least she wasn't arrogant. Now I can't reply to her stuff though because I'm not a member of Fartbook.

If you really want to know, the worst BDLD attacks are not instigated by pit bulls (for all the pit bull boo-hoo’ers out there); it’s Siberian Huskies attacking small dogs.

Ouch.
In my experience, it's usually the small dogs that start things. I always get my dog away from the area if a small dog comes running at us cause I know, no matter what happens, my dog is going to be blamed because A) It's a husky and B) It's the bigger dog.

Where are these statistics that say huskies are the worst when it comes to BDLD fights? That's what I would like to see. If you're gonna make a statement like that then you better be able to back it up with facts.

arooroomom : Thanks ill look into getting that book.

jbealer : Acually yes. almost every one of the owners of those dogs that came out at us or went at her the owners got either a warning or a fine from the cops. The ppl that owned those 2 dogs that attacked her at the same time they got fined for both dogs and had to pay for her vet bill (she got an infection in her eye). For how the dogs got into our yard no we do not have a fence. She is tied up on about a 60-70ft run in our backyard. And for her being outside alone she aint we are either outside watching her or right there inside waatching threw the door off the deck or the kitchen window. Also for when we are going on walks and another dog comes out at us. I do pull her to myside by the back of her harness and put myself inbetween the two and always yell at the other dog to stay or go away. And if it gets to close ill try to shoo it away with my foot or if gets to close i have grab ahold of them by the back of there head and pushd there head to the ground.

As for Josie how she reacts seems if dog gets withing 5 feet of us while walking she goes into protect/attack mode. But say if we are walking and the dog stops when i yell at it or if it is tied up. All she will do is look at it turn her head away and keep walking without missing a beat. Sometimes she will acually wimper a little bit and jump around like she wants to play with them. So hope thats a good sign at least. Mostly tho she keeps to herself very well never pulls to go up to another dog to sniff them at all or do anything.

Thanks for yalls insight tho means alot. And best part about this is all this stuff started to happen when some ppl in town wrote a big one page thing in the paper and tried to get the labeld "dangerous dogs" banned in our town (pop. 1486) and they used the Pitbull, Rottweiler, German Shepaerd, Husky, and Akita to ban. Nuthing happend to it. The city councial thought it was dumb and just forgot all about it and pretty much said should have stricker rules on the "leash law" and having your pet under control. So every insident at first we told the owner about it, if happend again cops were called depending on what happen was either a warning or a fine.
