As Ghost has got his winter coat, he's also got a few small reddish patches on his back, where he used to just be grey. The hair is red for most of its length, with a short white section and then a black tip. I quite like the red bits. Is it common for a husky to change his coat colour like this? I'm wondering if he will get more red, but most of him is still grey.

When we first got Dakota she was strictly black and white. Now that she's older we've noticed a red patch on her tail. I'm not sure when it first emerged, but I'd say she was around a year when we noticed.

I know it's not an actual answer to your question though... Laughing

Ghost has developed some reddish/brown patches, mostly where the black transitions to white on her hind legs. She's also developed some light brown around her eyes. I like the color changes she's had Cool

Thanks both of you. I think it's quite neat they change colour like this. Our Ghost has a little reddish patch above one eye where he used to be white too, maybe similar to the brown bits on your Ghost. I guess I have to wait til the Spring to see if it's permanent or just for the winter.

They can change a lot - not only as they grow, but even from season to season. It seems to affect the reds more than any others. This is our "Ute" two days after we collected him from the breeder in France. His coat wasn't in good condition and he had just shed. He was a light sandy colour:

And this was him a year later - coat in good condition but several shades darker:

When we got Adobo she was almost white except for a few merle spots on her head and ears. Four years later with each shed cycle her back and head have become a gray/silver and tan color. Each year she has changes.

It's quite normal and there's been a thread on this topic before. My boy gets lighter and darker with the seasons, he's gotten lighter overall as he's aged, and some years he gets the reddish/brown patches on his rear legs and some years he doesn't.

You can read more and see some additional pics in this thread:

Thanks for the photos. Mick, I would have thought that was a completely different dog if you hadn't said! He's beautiful and I like the darker coat too.

Sierra has changed a lot as well. I love the photo of her in the snow, she looks so happy! What a gorgeous dog.

Thanks for the link Val, I should have done a search. I enjoyed looking at Dakota's photos. It's interesting to see the change every season and from year to year. And again with the first and last photos together, I would have thought it was a different dog!

You all have such beautiful dogs and I think the coat changes just add to the beauty.
