PostSubject: Help! Sensitivity to food and bad diarrhea!!!   Sun Jan 15, 2012 2:08 am

So, I have had my puppy for two weeks now and ever since I got him at 8 weeks, we have had major stool issues...He had soft stool on the food that the breeder gave us and it turned to diarrhea for a couple of his bms...he was also treated for coccidia and giardia and I still need to submit a fecal test to make sure there arent anymore parasites....Anyways, we took him off of the food the breeder gave us and fasted him for a say and then put him on a bland rice/boiled chicken mix and he was on it for a bit over a week and his poop was nice and solid and then yesterday I decided to start trying a new food(solid gold wolf cub) so that we can transition him back onto dry dog food. I only added in a few kibble pieces into his plain rice and his poop started getting softer...so, I returned the solid gold wolf and bought orijen large breed puppy food(I have been hearing wonderful things about it) and have only given a few kibbles in with his rice again...well now his poop is back to diarrhea and he's gone to the bathroom atleast 5 times today! I dunno what to do! I just want him to have normal stools and get the.nutrition he needs as a growing pup! I don't know what else to try....I just ordered some THKs Perfect Form and hope that it will help, but does anybody have any other suggestions? Should I stick with the orijen LB puppy or try something else? I'm running out of ideas... Sad

We've had really good luck on both Blue Wilderness Puppy and Taste of the Wild. Ghost was old enough when we switched to TOTW that we just went ahead and did the all life stages formula instead of puppy, and they will send you free samples of you send them a note on their website. I've heard really good things about Orijen as well, but we can get TOTW locally and it's *much* cheaper.

If he was doing well on the chicken/rice combo then he's probably ok with rice, but when we had our onslaught of tummy issues we fed a combination of scrambled eggs, green beans, and carrots since those are pretty much universally safe. She firmed up instantly on that, and we started slowly introducing the Blue Wilderness. We really haven't had any problems with her tummy since, unless she eats too much rawhide or gets really stressed out. We're finding that we can even feed grain inclusive treats in very small quantities now that she's a little older.

Good luck!

I am no expert but in my own experience, Willow had soft stools until I switched her to Taste of the Wild. I didn't try any other brands becuase TOTW was on the cheaper side so I wanted to try it first and it worked, so I have stuck with it. She was a bit gassy on the High Prairie, however, she was also getting raw hides at the time. I don't know which one was the cause of the gas since I stopped both and switched to TOTW Pacific Stream. She no longer has any gas issues. Since starting TOTW, I have yet to pay full price for the food. Wag.com has coupon codes pretty regularly so I stock up whenever I can. First time buyers on Wag.com can use the code WAGPET to get 15% off of their order, plus spend $49 and get free shipping.

I'd put my money on the High Prairie formula. Ghost could peel the paint off the walls with regularity while we were testing that particular sample. Needless to say, she only got it for a couple days and when we switched to Pacific Stream the problem went away.

Thread hijack, but does wag.com have regular coupon codes? If so, where do you find them? I only find ones for new customers...

I signed up for the emails and I just got one last week for 13% off. I'm pretty sure Sam posted it on here a couple of days ago. She also posted around Christmas time the 2 different 50% off coupon codes....not sure where she found those. Maybe she will share her secret on that one. I think I have used 5 codes in the past 5 months...I'm trying to remember when I switched to TOTW.

Usually if I'm buying something online I'll just do a Goggle search of what the company name and then promo code.

example: wag promo code (then hit search/enter)

or I'll just go to www.retailmenot.com not to often they won't have something listed.

I will share my secret. Smile I just do internet searches for wag.com coupons - not all sites consistently have them. I also signed up for the emails. Most of their coupons are for new customers, difficult to find other coupons.

Back on topic - Solid Gold Hund-n-Flocken is a good food but Chili also consistently had soft stools on it. The ingredient list doesn't have wheat in it, so not sure what he couldn't tolerate in it. He also stopped eating it for 2 days out of protest for more yummy food. We tried a ton of samples from the local small pet store - perhaps there's someone in town to help you?

We're now on a combo of Nature's Variety Prairie (we rotate the flavors) and Nature's Domain Salmon (from Costco - made by Taste of the Wild's Diamond Foods). Not sure if either of them can be fed to a puppy since we've never had one. Smile You can compare ingredients of whatever foods you are considering on dogfoodadvisor.com.

Have you taken him to the vet to make sure he doesn't have a bacterial overgrowth? He might need some Metronidazole to get him back on track. When Kale was having chronic colitis, putting him on an antibiotic, then starting with a high quality kibble like Taste of the Wild, and a digestive supplement was the only thing that helped him. Just a suggestion.

Yes, I need to take a stool sample to the vet this week to rule out parasites or a bacterial overgrowth. I gave him some plain yogurt and.mixed it in with his rice and orijen LB puppy food last night not knowing if it would help or cause a messy disaster, but to my surprise it got rid of the diarrhea and his stools are now a lot more firm. Still soft, but easy to pick up. So, I'm pretty sure that his diarrhea was due to the Solid Gold wolf cub food, but I'm not sure if his firmed up stools are a result of the orijen lb puppy food, the plain yogurt, or both...but for now, ill keep him on the orijen with some plain yogurt and rice mix and then gradually decrease the rice and increase the orijen as long as his stools stay firm and formed...I also have to go and pick up the Perfect Form that I ordered...

Thank you everyone for all of your advice! I'll keep you guys updated! Crossing my fingers that his poop stays firm!!
