I have recently purchased a Siberian Husky just before Xmas and im triing to find some Husky friends in my area to meet up with My guy( River) is a little over a year old and im triing to fatten him up as he was malnurished before i got him so any suggestions would help... He currently gets a raw egg with dinner on his kibble and any meat i can pick up from the butcher as he hates to eat his kibble.
the other thing is his coat I understand they shed alot but he seems to be looking his guard hair and not the down any suggestions? how ever the egg is getting him nice and shiny

thanks for reading

Welcome!

I think you'll see his coat improve over time with a good diet and proper care. If he came to you malnourished I wouldn't be surprised at all by the poor condition of his coat. The egg and supplemental meat (are you feeding it raw?) will definitely help. Do you mind if I ask what kind of kibble he is on? Fish oil and extra virgin coconut oil are good at helping improve the skin and coat. I personally prefer to use coconut oil with my dogs but I know a lot of people prefer to supplement fish oil instead, both are good supplements to a healthy diet.

I am currently feeding him a bag of food my friend gave me I believe its cost co brand, as soon as thats done Im going to switch him to taste of the wild and I boil the meat only because it grosses me out to feed it to him raw but i have read that its really good for them, my butcher gives me free meat but its like cow heart, tounge and liver LOL its the only treat like stuff he will eat. hes extreamly picky ill have to try the oils though i have also heard that its good. How ever he will only eat once a day and its at night he wont touch food any other time and he wont eat anything that has any type of flour in it...is this common for huskies to me so darn pick makes me wonder if he malnurished him self

thanks for listining and im open to triing anythinkg to get him on the right track

Welcome! the costco food is not so bad but im not sure if your costco carries it but ours in CO does. its a brand called Nature Doman and its grain free and made from the same producers as TOTW. its about $32 a bag here. its good stuff and cheaper then the TOTW but i feed both and mix it together to help on cost.
YES huskies are picky eaters but they will never starve themselves. don't give in and "fancy" up his food just to eat it, he will make you do that till the end of time! they are smart. doing it to add to his health is one thing but most of us follow the you don't eat it in X time (say 15min) the food goes away till next feeding time, we don't give in to them and they learn to eat it or lose it.
Did you adopt your boy?

we are his 3rd owner that we know of??? he was originally found by spca and then picked up by the husky rescue in S.F. the people who adopted him only had him for 2 months, he kept jumping over ther 6 ft fence so they feared he would get hit by a car. so I saw the add for him up for sale now he has 10 acres to run on and 10 ft deer fence but I still kerp him on a line because he wants to chase our neigbors goats and im affraid he will dig under the fence to get them. but we just love him to death im actually in tge process of training him to be a service dog for my self and hes picking it up realy well he can almost turn on the lights and is learning to hold items I cant wait tell hes finished

That's awesome you're training him to be a service dog. I hope he has at last found his forever home with you. And as Claudia mentioned, the grain free Costco food is actually pretty decent and comparable with TOTW.

Welcome! If we had Costco here I'd definitely look into the food, but we are having great luck with TOTW. We are also training Ghost for the therapy program, and she's done very well in her classes so far. They definitely have the right disposition for it, you just need to be really thorough with the training since they tend to be a bit on the stubborn side. We are in the middle of Advanced training right now, and Ghost will test for her Canine Good Citizen (CGC) in about 3 weeks. After that, we will do the therapy specific training and testing. Good luck, as Dee and Frankie have proved, Huskies can make great service dogs!

River's a pretty baby. Very Happy My huskies are the smartest dogs I've ever had. They are stubborn, but I love that they think for themselves. I think River will probably be a great service dog!

Welcome! That is so great that you are giving River a chance to "show his stuff" and become a service dog. Huskies are incredibly smart dogs!

Welcome! He's beautiful!

How much does he weigh, can you feel his ribs? If so and he's significantly underweight, you can try the "silk balls" recipe to put weight on him quickly. It's like doubling their calories for the day, so be careful if he's not significantly underweight. Smile

when I first got him you could see every rib and hips and spine but since I have had him I can only see his back ribs and can no longer see his spine and his hips are starting to fill in a little. when I got him they told me he weighed about 45 lbs hes probably around 50 or so now. what is the silk balls recipe?

Google search "satin balls" and you should get a bunch of different recipes.
