I've had my puppy for 2 months now, he is 4 months old. He weighs around 27 pounds, is that big for a 4 month old? From other threads it seems to be. He eats 1.5 cups 3x a day, we started off feeding him less but he would always act hungry and go for his bowl and bag of food. He doesn't look fat at all I don't think. It's hard to measure him, but he's around 17 inches from his neck to the start of his tail and from that same point on his neck to the ground when on all fours. Is this big? And is it due to overeating?

I wouldn't worry too much about weight when they are this young. Dogs, like human children, grow at different rates, and there's also breeding and genetics that play a part on how tall, big, and long they will be when full grown. As long as he is eating well, keeping weight on, and growing, I'm sure he's just fine Smile

My puppy is 3 and a half months old and is 31 pounds! like hypers987 said, it is a good thing that your puppy is putting on weight Smile as long as you are exercising him at least an hour a day, should be fine!! Smile

Make sure your puppy has a waist line and palpable ribs. Dogs are opportunistic feeders so 'acting' hungry or searching out scraps is not abnormal nor is it a true indicator of hunger. But it does concern me some that your 4 month old puppy is eating almost double what my 8 month old girls do-

Lucian at 5 months old gets fed 1 cup of food, 3 times a day. He's 40lbs. He was around 30lbs at 4 months old. Lucian is not overweight by any means. If he starts to look plump, cut his food down a bit.

My 8 month girl is also getting fed a substantial amount less then your 4 month old..
While it is very good that your pup is eating and putting weight on, I would also be interested in seeing a picture. Has your pup been to the vet lately? Have they said anything about his weight?

Lani has working dogs though - who have to eat quite a bit to maintain weight.

None of mine have ever breached 3-4 cups as puppies which is the reason of my concern. Even my working dogs are yet to be at 4 cups even with extensive training.

Kale ate 3.5 cups a day roughly on high quality kibble... He was never overweight and ended up thinning out at about 5-6 months and that's when he started to eat less. He ended up being a bigger Sibe at 60Ibs and 25in at the shoulders. Just looked it up, Kale was 34.7 pounds at 4 months.

It can be a little difficult to get him to stand still but this is the best I could do.

Looks like a happy healthy puppy to me lol when he hits about 5.5-6 months you can start decreasing his food intake slightly Smile he's gorgeous BTW!!

He must just be a garbage disposal!!! He is beautiful Smile. Just remember you should be able to see the outline of his ribs! If it gets to the point where you can't just decrease his food. I have that problem with Kennedy, it's been extremely difficult finding a balance between how much food she needs and how much food she wants.

Outline of ribs at 4 months? Shocked lol None of my pups have ever been that lean that young; a visible waist is more of something you should be looking for IMO. I wouldn't worry too much about that until he gets a little older. Usually puppies carry a little extra weight because they're growing, not all, but most, and there's nothing wrong with that. Like I said above, he'll thin out when he starts his next growth spurt. Smile

Both mine get 2 cups of food TOTAL per day. Nikko’s food is split into 2 meals, and Yukon gets his split into 4 meals. Yukon always acts hungry too.

At 4 months old Nikko weighed 35lbs, and Yukon was 25lbs at 4 months of age, so weight can be much different. Nikko is more tall and lankly, while Yukon is more stocky.
