Bode is almost 5months and I don't think he has gotten his undercoat in yet. When does this usually come in?

Also, I'm still having problems brushing him. He will not let me brush him AT ALL. Any time I bring any kind of brush to his fur he turns around and tries to bite it and won't sit still. I've tried to distract him with treats, but to no avail. Any tips? I've tried using soft brushes, undercoat rakes, a brush that is a mitten, etc...

i'm not sure if this helps or not but our trainer told us to rub Dakota everywhere on his body , feet , ears , tushy nothing is sacred lol to get him desensitized. So it wouldn't matter where he gets touched he will not be bothered by it. After we started doing this the nipping and biting while we are petting him and brushing him has dropped signifigantly. I also started "brushing" him with my finger nails before i brought a brush along so he would get used to the feeling uf his fur being dug into and moved about. I'd say keep at it and like training do it several times throughout the day in short stinits. a couple min at a time slowly increasing the time over a few weeks till you can brush him completly without the drama Smile

The things is, he has absolutely no problems with petting, handling, etc...I rake my nails through his fur all the time. He even lets me clip his toenails without much fuss.

My two (3 months) react oddly to the brush as well...I can do anything to them until I run the brush through their coats. When i do the react as any other dog would react to fleas. It almost seems like it tickles their skin. I would be interested to hear tips as well.

Kale went through a "I don't want to be brushed" phase during his "teenage phase". He would snap at the brush and my hands. I, for one, was NOT going to let him decide when he got brushed and when he didn't. Every time he nipped, I would grab his muzzle, stare him in the eyes, and tell him "NO" in a very low growly voice, and I would keep him there for a few seconds longer. Then slowly release while still giving him the stick eye and continue brushing. I sounded mean, but I needed to get my point across that this needs to be done whether you like it or not, and biting isn't going to change that fact, so deal. lol And it worked. It took about a week and a half before he finally decided that toughing it out was way easier that fighting it, and boy did he fight it (it got worse before it got better). Now he just stands there and waits till I'm done.

Siku was about 9 months when she had her first big coat blow. Forget when Elara's was.

As for getting him used to it, just keep doing it every day and don't let him get out of it. Elara would scream bloody murder when I cut her nails as a puppy and she would fight me tooth and nail. But I would trim her nails once a week without fail. Eventually she got over it and now is fine with it. I didn't use treats, just held her in place until I was done and told her what a wonderful girl she was afterward. lol.

Indy is going through an Anti-brush period right now. It's so frustrating! He whines, screams, and just turns down-right ugly lol. You would swear I was torturing him with the sounds he makes!

Oh, psh. Rebel when it comes to grooming he just lays there. I can actually have him lay on his back between my legs on the floor and cut his nails, file his nails, and trim the fur between the pads. He's only 5 months old!

ETA: Indy lost his puppy coat at around 6 months and about 7 months his full adult coat came in at full force lol. He's a fluffy dog when he isn't out of coat. Indy just had his first coat blow at almost 1.5 years.

Rebel is 5 months and just had his adult coat start coming in about 3 weeks ago.

I thought Ares' coat looked flat and thin. Maybe he'll just have a thin coat. He doesn't look like his fur will be too dense. Not saying that in a negative way! Hopefully he just wont shed or blow coat as much as the full coated sibes! Razz

Thunder did that for about a month, he just recently realized he has no choice with the brushing and if he holds still it is done faster, the whole nine, nipping my hands, the brush and trying to run like a looney toon, now I can brush him for about 15 min before he had had enough and I think that is a BIG accomplishment for a 5 month old.

Yeah his coat is very thin. He still has no undercoat so I'm thinking he'll eventually grow into a more dense coat. He's from the same breeder as Embry, half brothers and this was Embry at 9 months with barely any coat

Okami is really fluffy and looks 10lbs larger than she really is because of her coat, but I think it is still her puppy coat. She is 6 months old.

With the brushing situation that I've also gone through, we learned to only brush her when she's extremely tired, like when she comes back from the dog park every evening. She rolls around everywhere at the park and gets dog slobber all over her so we have to wipe her down anyways. We also do this before we feed her. She struggled with the brushing a lot in the beginning (nipping, biting, whining, running away, you name it), so we'll just wipe her with some puppy wipes. She loves the puppy wipes because it's nice and cool and she loves it when we clean her eye shit for her -_-. But we apply the brush every evening even if just for a second. It also helps if you apply pressure with one hand close to where you're brushing, like you do when you brush long hair - don't know if you have/had long hair, but typically when you brush any hair that has a knot in there, you don't pull hard; you use one hand to hold the upper part of your hair and then you brush the knot out so that your scalp doesn't get the pain from all the pulling. This also helps to take your dog's attention away from the feeling of the brushing; they'll think you're just touching them at the spot where you're brushing them.

Anyways, one day, we realized that she'll even let us brush her any time during the day. She'll plop down and go to sleep, and sometimes she'll flip over on her own to let us brush her other side. It's as if she's associated the brushing with the coolness of the puppy wipes, tiredness that she feels after coming home from the park, and the feeding right after.
