Groomer Terror Empty
PostSubject: Groomer Terror   Groomer Terror EmptyWed May 02, 2012 11:41 pm

So long story short, koda went to the groomers when we was a puppy 1 or 2 times, and he was fine, and then when he turned 1 for some reason he didn't want anybody cleaning him. We got denied by Petsmart (he was mouthy), and the groomer we took him too as a pup claimed "he should be sedated if we ever bring him again cause he's mouthy as well" Although i understand their safety concern he never snarls up or anything of that sort. So i took the liberty of ordering Earthbath's Mango Tango, and a Kong Zoom Groom after reading almost everybody's post about grooming.
So armed with a handheld shower head and the bathing essentials me and the GF took to the shower, and to our surprise he was a very good boy, calm and only tried to get out of the tub once or twice. So i don't know whether it was him feeling comfortable with us and uncomfortable with the groomers, but i guess we'll have to bathe him from now on. We take him to the vet to get his nails clipped, and it usually takes about 2vets to hold him down and then another just to clip his nails. Its a little embarrassing...

Anybody else have this problem with their Husky, and the groomers or vet?

Ava's record at the vet for restraint was 5 people, plus one person for the procedure (bloodwork). It usually takes four people to do a nail trim.

Huskies tend to be kinda pissy about anyone doing anything to them that they don't want done - most groomers and vets know to expect it to some degree. With Ava, I messed with her paws and took her to groomers a bunch when she was a puppy to try and desensitize her to it, but she still hates it. I've even taken her places to have a groomer -pretend- to clip her nails and just handle her paws a lot. She's still not happy with it. Granted, I've never trusted her with someone else for a full groom, but I"m sure she wouldn't tolerate that too well either. She screams whenever I groom her...

I work at a vet so I'm always there when Ava gets her nails/bloodwork done. One of the things that we do at work is take the dog/cat out of the room with the owner because most of the time they're less reactive and behave better without their owners. Ava is exactly the opposite and does so much better if I'm with her, so you might want to try that. In addition to the fact that it calms her down, I found out that the one time I let her get her nails done without me there, she got scared and one of the new girls was really forceful and rough with her - she nipped the girl. Not a full bite, just a warning touch, but I totally don't blame her for that. Since then, I had seen the girl work with animals before and she didn't know how to restrain anything, let alone a scared animal. She didn't touch my animals again and no longer works there. After that, they wanted to muzzle Ava just in case, but she's never seemed mouthy since then. She can take a muzzle off really quickly though.

Now, we've learned to take her into a room by herself and I help restrain. She still gets so panicky and so scared that I feel awful, but it has to be done, especially her yearly bloodwork. I get her head, someone else sits on the exam bench and gets her body, yet another someone helps hold her feet and trim. We used a muzzle last time because she gets upset and screams/howls so loud that its deafening.

It sounds like a horrible ordeal, but whenever I apologize for her behavior, everyone just shrugs and says "she's a husky," and lets it go. There's definitely dogs that are better and worse out there, so I try not to worry too much. We have several clients that have to be completely sedated before we can even get them into the building, so I'm thankful I don't have to deal with that.

It takes a couple people to hold my lab down for nail trimming too. So far Balon is very calm at the vet, he just lies there while they do the nail trim. But boy try to give him a bath and you need noise cancelling headphones! He acts like I am trying to kill him, screaming and jumping up and down lol, I am hopeful he will get better with baths lol. bounce
