| Hi everyone,
Me and my gf are planning a camping and hiking trip and we will be moving back to Illinois. I havent been camping much really ever so I dont know of any good areas around the chicagoland area. We do plan on bringing Nike and she will be around 4.5 months when we go. Where have you camped in this area and how was it?
I cant wait to hear all of your suggestions.
Thanks!! |

| 90 minutes from the city takes you to several parks along the Illinois River, including Starved Rock. Lots of canyons to explore along the river. A couple hours takes you northwest of Milwaukee to Kettle Moraine State Park and the Ice Age Trail. Very hilly and a nice break from the otherwise flat trails we have around here. 5 hours south is Shawnee National Forest at the southern end of the state. 4 hours into lower Michigan and you have Manistee National Forest and the North Country Trail. 6 to7 hours north into Wisconsin gives you Nicolet National Forest.
Enjoy!

| If you want to go south, there are some good places in central IL and IN as well. I used to go camping and hiking in Fox Ridge State Park, which is near Charleston and about 4 hours from downtown. Lake Shelbyville is another good area and is sort of in between Charleston and Decatur. If you're feeling a little more adventurous, Turkey Run in Indiana is pretty awesome as well. I'd say that's maybe 5 hours from downtown, north of Terre Haute. We used to go there from time to time with scouts when I was a kid. Good luck! _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | starved rock is an awesome place to go hiking! it's more towards central IL probably around 2-3 hours from the chicago area. there's trails but there's also tons of canyons so depending on your experience you can definitely get a good hike in. it's also dog friendly! there's camp grounds there too but also hotels in the area so you can stay wherever you want. |
