Puppy feeding Empty
PostSubject: Puppy feeding   Puppy feeding EmptyThu May 24, 2012 3:19 pm

I feel like Snow isn't eating enough. I was letting her eat morning, noon and night but then I changed it to morning and night because she wasn't eating a lot and I thought maybe making her wait from morning to night would make her eat more. I've tried sitting with her but she eats a few bites and then walks away. I would let her eat in her crate but she still doesn't like her crate and will cry and spill her food. Suggestions?

What are you feeding her? How much?

You're in NC, has it been hot lately?

I know the weather can impact my girl's appetite but she won't starve herself. Any healthy dog won't. Smile

She's also very young, and you've only had her for a few days right? She may still be acclimating to her new environment.

It's completely normal for her not to eat all her food. Our new puppy Nicky (8 weeks) is still adjusting to our home as well and isn't eating a full meal yet. I feed her the amount of food her breeder recommended I feed her and if she doesn't eat it all, I pick it up and offer it again a few hours later (if she is whining and looks hungry). If she still doesn't want it, I give it to her again at night. I wouldn't worry too much about this, it sound's completely normal as she is getting use to you and you're house.

I never had that problem with Balon, he eats three cups a day spread over 3 meals! He eats every single bite, BUT he is still kinda mushy!

Not eating every meal is notorious husky behavior. After a year and a half, I have thrown up my hands. I used to feel guilty that he never ate his morning food. After he got a little older, I just stopped giving it to him and offered him his first food of the day around 2:00-3:00. Now he has stopped eating that too! So he gets all of his food sometime around 6:00 or whenever we eat dinner... and still there are times he won't eat it until 10:00!

If we have to get him to eat because we will be gone over regular dinner time or something like that, we sprinkle some parmesan cheese on his food or mix in a little canned food.

That makes me feel better. Although we bought some Blue and mixed a little in with her regular food.... She ate ALL of it.

Soudns liek she just doesn't like her food. We have to lack of eating with Delilah, but wit Cato I;m afraid he would gorge himself. He is such a little piggy!

If you switch foods, they will often eat it excitedly for the first week or so and then it's back to "whatever". Actually, switching foods can create a picky eater. The dog will think that he can hold out until you switch him to something better.

Well I had to switch... Blue is much healthier than Purina.

First make sure you're not offering too much food. Keep feeding on a schedule and whatever you do be consistent. Remember, a healthy dog will not starve itself. As others have said, switching foods too often can create a picky eater though I understand you did it to switch to a higher quality food.

What I did with my dog was put her food down for 5-15 minutes and then take it back up whether she had eaten or not and then I would try again at the next meal time. She eventually got the message that she eats what and when I tell her to.
