My chubby puppy... Empty
PostSubject: My chubby puppy...   My chubby puppy... EmptyWed Jun 13, 2012 3:08 pm

My Skadi is 8 months old and is definitely on the chubby side. I know how it happened: treats during training, treats when she was being good, treats to keep her busy in the crate while we were at work (mainly frozen peanut butter filled kongs and frozen marrow bones).

I give her 1/2 cup Acana Pacifica with a little wet food twice a day. I've significantly cut back her treats, she gets plenty of exercise, and we just adopted another husky to keep her company during the day (so we don't have to rely on treats for entertainment.) Our new husky Clover is 2, and looks so much smaller and thinner compared to Skadi.

The problem is she isn't losing weight, .and I'm afraid to cut back her food too much since she's a growing puppy. Plus, she acts like she's starving all the time. I'm not sure what to do at this point, do you think she will grow out of it?
Should I eliminate treats completely?

How much does she weigh? Do you have any picture's of her? From what I've read on here from other members, they say Huskies can go from being lanky/skinny, to being a bit more stocky, and then go to being more lean as they fill out. Hayden is currently 8 month's old as well and for a while everyone thought he was this skinny little twig, now he's putting on the weight (almost 56 lbs). His fur is really filling in and he's looking more fluffy, which could make them appear chunky. If you're vet think's she is overweight, then I would just cut back on the treat's and increase her exercise. You can also switch her treat's to more healthy/natural. Give her chicken breast, turkey hot dogs, low fat string cheese pieces, etc. Smile

First off welcome and congrats on the new additions to your family.

I guess my question is... What does she weigh? and are you thinking she is chubby compared to the new addition?
When you feel her sides can you still feel rib cage? She just may be a bigger size husky and the new addition may be on the petite side.
My 10 month old Lucy looks heavier than my almost 4yr old Libby, but they arent compareable in size and shape. Lucy is shorter and stockier like the breed where as Libby is taller and leaner. She is all leg. LOL

I don't have a recent weight on her: taking her to the vet tomorrow. I will post some pics when she wakes up on her nap.

Part of it may be that she's filling out/ getting fluffier, but I can't really feel her rib cage when I press.

Thanks so far. Pics to come!

I really sounds like you may be comparing two dogs is why Skadi appears to be chubby.

I adopted a second husky 3 weeks ago she is 2 years plus and looks like she is under weight and very small. Blaze my other husky is about 20 months old after 2 weeks with Kerian I was beginning to think Blaze had put on weight. I got them both weight the other day and determine that they probably are at good weight for their sizes as you can see from my sig.

Looks like that counter surfing might be the weight issue lol! she does look like she should lose some lbs, you will know for sure tomorrow after her visit.

i would suggest looking for a lower cal food to feed her. you can sub. in green beans and other veggies to help her feel full with out adding on the lbs.
just a comparison:
Acana Pacifica
Calories per kg: 4050 cal, of which 36% from proteins, 32% from fat, 32% from fruit and vegetables.

TOTW pacific stream
Guaranteed Analysis %: Crude Protein Minimum 25 Crude Fat Minimum 15 Moisture Maximum 10 Crude Fiber Maximum 3 Omega-6 Fatty Acids * Minimum 2.4 Sodium Maximum 0.3 Omega-3 Fatty Acids * Minimum 0.3
Calorie Content: 3,600 kcal/kg (360 kcal/cup) Calculated Metabolizable Energy.

since she is still a puppy i would not feed her a reduced cal food just yet.

Yeah, I thought the counter surfing picture was appropriate, lol. I'll try mixing some veggies in with her food. She loves them all

What wet food are you adding? I would probably just take that out of the diet and depending on how much you added, just add a little more kibble. As for treats, you can just use her food as treats and ration it so you don't overfeed. I have to be careful with Elara's weight too. She gets 3/4cup of Acana twice a day and some treats during the day.

Ok, Skadi got weighed at the vet today: 44.5 pounds. She was 37 pounds in March. Not as bad as I thought it would be. I've eliminated the wet food and she is enjoying the green beans mixed with kibble. I think they are filling her up more, I used some of her kibble ration as a treat throughout the day along with some apple slices and broccoli (her favorite vegetable, lol)

Hopefully this helps her lean out a bit. Thanks!

@jbealer- I've cut out the greenbeans and added a little wet food since she sees to be maintaining her weight. I kept her on the Acana Pacifica. I've also been very careful about what kind and how many treats she gets. Plus we got a fence so she and Clover can chase each other around the yard for extra exercise. Smile
