10-day hiking trip, raw diet alternative Empty
PostSubject: 10-day hiking trip, raw diet alternative   10-day hiking trip, raw diet alternative EmptyFri Aug 03, 2012 12:03 am

I've been feeding Kai raw food since I got him last October. Sometimes he will get into my brother's dog food which is Purina One dry food. If he eats a lot he will throw it up but usually he will just get diarrhea.

I am going on a 10 day hiking trip and want to bring him but keeping raw food cold will be a challenge. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to overcome this challenge?

Ziwi peak is an option... A bit on the expensive side but that's what I used.

You could try the primal freeze dried. Or any freeze dried for that matter. It will take more time to prepare but would be easy to store and travel with.

I didn't even think of freeze dried foods. Thanks for the tips. His food may cost more than mine.

There are quite a few freeze dried options as well as dehydrated foods:
Stella & Chewy's
Primal
Sojos
Honest Kitchen, etc

Lots of excellent suggestions, I'd go with Ziwipeak and/or Stella & Chewy's for a dog used to an exclusive PMR diet. Of course they are not cheap, but if it's only for 10 days they won't break the bank.

You can get the small bag of Ziwipeak for around 22 dollars. Aside from raw, this is the best thing you can feed. I can't say enough good things about it, just unfortunate how prices have gone up so much on their 10lb bag (just as a note, that size lasts about 5-6 weeks for one dog). The small bag fed Koda for about 7 days I think. I think they sell the small bag on Wag, and if you can use their 15% off, obviously that will help with price.

All Ziwipeak is is the meat dehydrated into a soft jerky. No fruit or veggies, just vitamins and minerals added. No water needed. You can email they directly for samples- which they are pretty gracious with.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I am going to try the ziwipeak. I can get it locally which is nice. Hopefully it works out.
