PostSubject: New Loose stools   New Loose stools EmptySun Jan 24, 2010 3:48 pm

My Pups are 12 weeks old , They have been on Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken since we broght them home 6 weeks ago ( well they were on Purina at the breeder , I know i was shocked when she said that's what she fed them) Anyway, their stools firmed up good, but now for the past week they have been loose. They stool about twice a day, once early morning and once mid afternoon.

Now they are outside for about 30min at a time in the fenced yard, and they do like to chew on stuff, I see themchewing on low hanging branches, digging in the snow and chewing on grass and leaves. Not sure if that would set them off. They did get in the garbage once and ate some tossed stoffers French bread pizza , I figured thats what caused it and was hoping it would clear, but it hasn't . Any suggestions.

Also we may be switching food, the Pet's Suply Plus where we buy from didn't reorder the large bags and they wont be in for another 2 weeks and I am not paying $10.00 for 4lbs again, so were kinda in a jam, and this would probally be the time to switch since we have a samll bag to mix with and allready have loose stools to deal with.

The grass thing makes for a runny pancake mess around here in May. Not sure what it is with the new season's grass but they love it, and it takes about two days to go back to solids. The last time Sioux got in the trash, he was runny for three days. That bag was full of beans and green chili though, I'm sure that helped liquefy things. I'm not the brightest with these kind of situations, I always seem to ride it out just fine. Others will give you some more specific advice when they show up.

You have to be careful when you switch food with a puppy. Make sure it's a brand/type specific for puppies as it'll have the right amount of protein and vitamins that they need in their growing years.

I can't recommend anything because I have honestly never had a puppy. However, if you need something to firm up their stools, mixing in a bit of canned pumpkin (from the grocery store) would firm up their stools and help regulate their digestive system. It's perfectly healthy and rather cheap Smile

www.dogfoodanalysis.com is a great place to start when looking for new foods or brands. Just remember that you'll want to find a bag specifically for puppies. Good luck!

The vet prescribed the Purina FortiFlora for Mika, when she was having mushy or runny stools. It has worked wonders for her. You put it on their food for 30 days. However, being puppies, don't think that would work for them. Good luck with their little bellies. BTW, mcdlabs, where in MI are you? Northern part? I am on the most Southern end of the state.

I feed my huskies Purina Pro Plan Salmon and brown rice, its not a puppy food, but they do absolutely great on it:) But first thing first: make sure they have had an intestinal parasite screening as those can cause loose stools, also what kinds of treats are you feeding? A gastrointestinal bout can last for a little while, I would say to get their stool checked and to be honest with puppies you can't be too careful, so I would recommend you get them into your vet. It may not be a simple food intolerance, so I would be careful with switching foods, ALWAYS do it gradually. I hear that the solid gold brands are pretty good, you said hundCHEN flocken right? I know the adult formula is hund-n-flocken so make sure you aren't getting them mixed up. Solid gold foods are becoming pretty popular, you may want to call around and see if any grooming shops or vet clinics in your area carry it.

We live about an hour North of Detroit Amy. Are You a member of the Siberian Husky Club of Greater Detroit. We will be looking at them in February, see what they have going on.

They goto the Vet tomorrow, scheduled for their follow up, they did have worms and went through the tretment, their stools firmed up for a bit, its just been the past week or so.

Also about the food, yes its the puppy formula, we did check around for who all sells it, only the PetsSupplyPlus here in town carries it, were alittle ticked at them since we asked them to order it in on the next shipment and they didn't , they tell us the next shipment wont be for 2 weeks. We had to do something since they are down to 1/2 a small bag, that wont last long, so we went to PetSmart up picked up some BlueBuffalo (basically the best brand they carry) still a 4 star premium food, also tried some pumpkin as suggested, It can't get any worse.

The treats may be an issue we did try some Bil-Jac ones new recently, but they haven't got any of them since the loose stools started, in case that was the cause. Poor little guys. I know if I was crapping like them I'd be miserable, but they are tough little troopers , still as energetic as ever.

Well we will see what the vet says tomorrow.

Hmm well i did the pumpkin thing last night and with mornings meal. Keira's are firming up , I didn't see where kiki did her business this morning ( we have a recent warm spell here in Michigan, so we sorta have a lot of spots in the yard that was covered in snow. She usually goes over in the far corner but lets just say there was a few weeks worth of "mines" in that spot after the thaw and rain the past 2 days.

UPDATE: the vet said no parasites, I did see a small metal ring in Keiras poo this morning ( less than 5mm diameter) I think it was KiKi tag ring, i found the tag in the yard the other day , wondered where the ring went, guess now I know. At least she passed it.

Its amazing what this little carazy demons think they can eat. their not the ones cleaning it up though " ARE THEY!!"

Anyway, just have to watch their stool for the next few days see if they remain formed, if not they get some of that powder for 2 weeks. Also suggested to add some yougurt to their kibble.
