Nail Trimming - How often Empty
PostSubject: Nail Trimming - How often   Nail Trimming - How often EmptyMon Nov 19, 2012 5:47 pm

Okay so here is the thing . . . I have been trimming Saphire's nails once a week as recommended by my vet and the Husky's for Dummies book. We get no wear down on our walks because we stick to the open fields near our house (A. because Saphire is only 9 months old and B. because she likes it more).

However, it seems like her nails grow way too fast and trimming once a week isn't enough. I use the pedi-paws because I was a nervous wreck using the clippers and Saphire wouldn't sit still for it (I think because she sensed that I was uncomfortable). Also I won't pay to have something done I can do myself. She sits wonderfully while getting her nails done. I get as close to her quick as the vet showed me but no closer.

Anyway the problem is that we have laminate floors throughout the main part of the house with only two area rugs and carpet in the bedrooms and on the stairs. It seems like when Saphire's nails get too long she has trouble walking on the laminate floor and slips a lot. I don't want her to get hurt.

So my question is should I be trimming her nails more frequently (like say twice a week) or are they growing faster because I am trimming them so often??

Any input and advice would be great and thanks in advance.

They probably just grow back faster because of the fact they are not worn down daily on your walks and whatnot. My two rarely need a trim since their nails grind down themselves real nicely from our bike rides and runs, but Koda's front dew claws I have to do weekly.

I don't see an issue with trimming them more if needed.

Some dog's nails grow faster than others. I've never had to trim my Huskies nails (only the dew claws every so often). I also have laminate flooring and never had a pup get hurt yet Smile

I think the nails would help prevent slipping, because they help with traction.

I have laminate floors too. Suka slips and slides because he has a lot of fur in between in paw pads. Ever since I've started to trim the fur there (with an old beard trimmer - safer than scissors!), he hasn't been slipping as much.

Suka gets his nails trimmed (along with a bath) every 8 or so weeks at the grooomer's. I find that's fine for him, but each dog is different.

I never thought about trimming the dew claws!

I have never trimmed any of their claws, but I have had them done at the groomer's. I try taking them there at least once every 3-4 months. They go on 3 miles of walks a day though on pavement so they get ground down.

I have laminate flooring in my kitchen/dining room only, and it is kind of funny when Nikko is running about, he can't get a running start and it's like a cartoon character watching in run in place LOL

Maybe I need to try this. Now that you say it I have noticed that as Saphire has gotten older (she is only ten months old) the fur between her toes has gotten longer and thicker. Maybe this is keeping her from being able to get good pad to floor contact.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll give it a shot tonight and see how it goes.

We tip the nails on all the dogs every week, along with long walks to keep them ground down. Sometime we take a fraction of a mm off of a nail, sometimes we take half a centimeter. I wouldnt think twice about cutting more often if they needed it, though.

Personally, I think a pedipaws dremel is more difficult than a pair of scissor hinged clippers. I can't show you on a forum, obviously, but there is a really eas way to cut with clippers and not quick the dog. You should see how confident you can cut when you know the trick. 20 paws only take about 5 minutes.

Just wanted to send a big thank-you your way. Tried this out and Saphire is no longer slipping on the laminate floors!! Plus it made it much easier to see to trim her nails. Less fur in the way means better visual! Thanks again. I never would have thought of this on my own.
