Ok, so a week and a half with the wee one, and she has not calmed down any with crate training (no, I dont really expect her to, but some improvement would be nice!) She cries all nite. Well, screams all night is a better description. (god help me!) We try to wear her out before bed, then it's potty and then in the crate. She will scream non-stop for about an hour (take her potty, then right back in)....more screaming...she will go hard at it for about 50 min, then pass out basically for about 5-10 minutes, then start up again....this goes on ALL NITE. Cry for about 40 - 50 min...quite for 5-10. Her crate is in the kitchen, so when I am working with her during the day, she can hear and see me (which really doesn't seem to matter) What she wants to do is sleep in my bed (which I admit, I have done some, as I am just exhausted) She will sleep in 4-5 hour stretches if she is in my bed. Not a good thing, I know, but I have been sick, and I really needed a break! So, my question to you is...what if I have two crates??? One in the kitchen for during the day, and one in the bedroom for night-time ?? With this confuse her?
I am sure I have confused her already...just don't want to confuse her more by changing things. I need a stable routine for her. I am really worried that she has now gotten a bit traumatized with the crate, and will not overcome it. Or at least that is what my hubby tells me.

Have you tried to move the crate if possible into your bedroom? Our first night with Tika she screamed for an hour in her crate (in a separate room) and when we moved it in with us she went right to sleep. They have a tendancy to want to be with the pack. You dont have to buy two in my opinion. Ours was easily moved.
It was a big difference for us.

Alternatly you could buy a small bed and try her on that at night, and then crate her during the day while keeping it a positive place so that she understands its for when you have to go out.

Well, I already have two crates (as we have 4 dogs in total now). But they are two different types of crates. One is hard wire cage, er, crate...one is a travel soft sides crate. I worry she will chew and damage the soft crate, but it might work at night. My 11 year old said, Mom, just put her crate on the bed with you!! LOL. Not totally crazy, though. Wink

Try it out for a few nights and see how it goes, put it close enough to you that she can see you if possible. Ours is right next to the bed, but we were able to transition her out of it within a few months.

Huskies are smart, if you keep up the same thing it becomes normal and not confusing. Use the wire crate during the day and the soft one in ur room at night. She will get it Smile when we crated S&J we always used the same treat for crate time and the same (but differant treat) at night so they could learn each treat meant crate or bed time, we don't crate any more but still use the treat method for training.
Give it a try Smile

We have a wire crate in the living room for the day and a platic one facing the bed for bedtime. She understands the difference. I'd try the soft one at night as well Smile

Koda was in a platic crate for about 3 weeks when i brougjt him home cause the big wire crate i got him was to big cause he would wine and cjew the wires and get his mouth atuck the. Yelp in pain.. So i jad a smaller plastic one i used for a while and he actually seems to like it more cause it was more enclosed and dark.. Jat a few days ago i swtihed him to the bigger wire one and he is fine wit it.. So your pup might actually like the soft one you have compared to the wire one..

Yukon cried the first couple of weeks I got him and I had him in the plastic carriers, and kept it in my room. When he started in at night I would reach down and tap it so he knew I was there. After the first couple weeks I would keep him in another room in the wire crate, which he did not like too much. By the time he was 4 months old I had him sleeping in my bed, where he sleeps now LOL. Last night he fell asleep with his head on my pillow under the covers, and that’s how I found him this morning!

Have you tried feeding her while in the crate? It may help her associate the crate with something positive. We did that a lot during the first week we got our puppy, and he ended up going in and out of it on his own. He wasn't exactly perfect at bedtime though. That was a challenge for us too for a while. It seems to just finally work itself out.

Yup feeding her in there and ramdomly leaving treats. She does go in there and check thru the day. Trying to put her in when i see her naping too. She hops right out and i just keep putting her back in. Trying to be as positive as possible!

First nite was a big success! Put her in the soft sided crate next to the bed and she wimpered a bit she calmed right down. No screaming or howling. She did get up every two hours to pee until about 3 am but then slept until 6 am. I can live it that!!! Now if she can just do better in the other crate went iust leave her for a few moments, we'll be home free!!!! Whew!

Koda still whines a little during the day 2.. Its seems the more energy he has thr more he whines.. So maybe try and tire your pup out before you have to leave if you can.. They will probably still whine at first but should stop..
